Windshield Wipers Get Stuck in the Vertical Position

I have a 2008 E90. Yesterday, while driving in the pouring rain, my wipers were on and during one of the cycles they got stuck in the farthest vertical position right before they come back to "rest". I heard a dull noise which must have been the wiper motor(?) and turned the wipers off. (Luckily my car wash soap has wax in it so the windshield didn't get to where I couldn't see!) The next chance I got to pull over I turned the wipers back on. Nothing. With them on I gave them a nudge and they returned to rest and I then turned them off immediately. I then turned them on again and they got stuck in the vertical with the dull noise. Pushed them back to rest again and turned them off again and that's where I am with this right now.

What can I do to troubleshoot this? I couldn't find anything on the Internet regarding this specific issue so I am posting here.

Thanks

Garage List
It's an electrical part. Check fuses. Go from there.

Exact same thing happened to me. My research told me it was either the wiper relay or a bad motor. I changed the relay, it did nothing. I changed the wiper motor and it fixed the problem.
The motor swap is fairly simple and can be done in the driveway.
