"lossless" compression is a misnomer. Compression, results in the removal of some data. Loss of that data and it's subsequent quality is debateable. Some people, most people, can not hear a difference.
Compression alogrithmns are written based on that inability, or lack of reference. That, however, does not mean that there is "no loss".
There is loss, the question is whether you can hear it, and/or do you have a reference to know the difference.

I work in video and audio production, thus I am more critical than most are. Now, I'm not saying that's good or bad or better or worse, just that I'm very tuned in to it. I do hear a difference and I'm happy that my colleques are working on better compression methods and larger and cheaper and smaller storage devices.
In this interim we simpy have to deal with what we can accept.

BTW, not everyone has the 60GB iPod. Much lower capacity MP3 players are the norm. Apple wants too much for it anyway and I'm not that impressed anyway. I can carry my CD's in my car easily and change them as I please. That's just my choice.
It's reassuring that some people do keep song number lower in order to get better fidelity. However, that's not the norm and my comments are meant to just help keep the word out there that MP3 is not the defintive in audio quality.

If the MP3 quality is ok for you, that's fine, it's your choice.
But, my point is it is NOT hi fidelity/high quality.
I've explained extraneous noise/sound vs. sound source quality, they are not the same.

Also, I spoke of spending money to make my BMW sound system better. I agree the basic BMW 3 series audio is not so great.
I have not tried the Logic7 yet, but I am getting that on my 330i.

Yes, it is a compromise, one I don't need to make. I am pointing out that a lot of people do, and that a lot of people don't or won't know what "good" audio is because of the marketing towards "more is better" rather than "better quality is better."
When you get your 330i, would you please post back here on your impressions of listening to MP3s encoded at 256bit through the Logic 7?

Thanks,
Carl

You can plug your i-pod into your MM. Or just have two input lines.

This is not true. A file that is compressed with a lossless algorithm will, by definition, be identical to the original upon de-compressing.

This is just flat out wrong.

Lossless compression algorithms are exactly that, lossless.

They achieve their compression ratio by representing the data in a more space-efficient manner, rather than through "removal of some data".

I suggest you google.

Does anyone know if the new iPod connector will charge the iPod when it's docked to the car?

I am waiting for this answer too. But not just for when the car is on.

No chance, none whatsoever IMHO, that it will charge the iPod when the car is off.

This is a car in which the frickin' HomeLink buttons won't work when the ignition is off! (For a laugh, you should search the threads on THAT topic in which people try to make the brain-dead case that it's good that you have to leave the engine running in your garage to close the stinkin' door).

Oh wait a moment...maybe that's PRECISELY the reason it WILL charge when the car is off. Because it's part of the BMW-software-makes-no-sense-and-is-totally-inconsistent design philosophy.

You DO know how turn on accessory mode on so that the moonroof and homelink buttons work without starting the car, right?

You mean "radio readiness" right? HomeLink doesn't work at radio readiness (or as the manual puts it, "as of radio readiness." ) HL requires at least ignition on, a two-step process (remote in, push start button with foot off the brake).

Dumb and dumber.

The Homelink buttons don't work when the key isn't in the ignition by design as a security precaution. Say you're parked in your driveway and mysteriously leave the windows wide open or the doors unlocked.

Say someone hops in your car and sees the Homelink buttons and says to him/herself "huh, I wonder if I can get into this stupid person's garage?" and presses one and, to his/her surprise and amusement, the garage opens. It could be a bonanza of lawn equipment or meat from the garage freezer or whatever.

Now, I know that many people also leave their door from the house to the garage unlocked (I even do it some of the time). What if the same person who was curious about getting into your garage to take all the meat or beer from your garage fridge/freezer was also curious about getting into your house and stealing your TV or your heirloom silver or whatever.

_That's_ why the homelink buttons won't work without the key in the ignition, _not_ because BMW's software engineers are idiots.

Now, those of you who were too busy to search for the threads I mentioned before which contain this "justification" for this absolute engineering flaw in the electrical system of our cars can read it here.

Hondas get it right. Why didn't BMW?

But you don't need the car running for this. I don't understand the problem.

The video cleared up many things for me.

One thing I am curious about though, is that why they use labels CD1 through CD6 instead of the proper playlist, album, artist etc in the I-Drive menu? Beta software?

The iPod adapter, while it is coded as an iPod adapter on the car - NOT as a CD player - is to some extend using functions that the car sees as CD player functions. Hence, at this juncture, it uses these labels. I think it may be resolved eventually but probably not before release.

Each market will probably make its own announcement - if I hear anything, I promise to advise.

As an aside, you might want to fix your quote, "Fangen Sie mich..." - as most people who would say "catch me if you can" would not use the polite form of you ("Sie") but rather say ,,Fang mich``.
