335i Sedan Smoking / Turbo

Hello i have a 335i sedan dps intercooler, previous owner was running meth jb4 e85 400 + hp . Just have a problem now, when i punch the gas smokes a lil smells like oil , dont know if its white or blue, but only when i punch it or when letting off. Could this be bad turbo seals? and can they be rebuilt?

Exhaust smells like oil and smokes when you lift? Seals.

No, I have not unfortunately. I'll let you know if I find something. The turbos are not too expensive today, around $600 per turbo. It might be cheaper to buy new ones versus replacing the seal or re-building the turbo. Maybe someone with some actual experience will chime in. GL.

If you're back to stock and the car is still within the 82k limit, you can take it in to the dealer for replacement. Just indicate they rattle and you go through a qt or oil every 1200 to 1500 miles. Just had mine replaced. Just don't leave anything on your car that could be considered a modification.

If it is the seals you might as well just buy a new turbo for piece of mind. Assuming you're not doing the labor yourself the labor will be much more than the cost of the turbo.

Yea it's the labor that gets you cost wise, an actual turbo bank isn't that brutal of a cost at this point.

Hmmm I wonder if I could swindle this with zero WG rattle? My seals appear to be on the way out, but my snails build boost perfectly and make no rattle whatsoever. And despite the puffs of smoke when coming to a stop, my car isn't burning much oil, maybe a qt to top off between each OCI. I'd imagine if I brought in a car that hit boost fine, didn't smoke with OE downpipes, and didn't rattle, they'd just

Might be a good time to get the hybrids and ship your old ones in because they get brand new seals and what not. I'm almost 100% it is your seals letting oil into the turbine and blowing it off the rear (like everyone else is suggesting). Try not to drive too much like this or else the oil will gunk the turbine and you will have turbo failure and a shit ton of oil spitting out your back end and will need to call a trailer. Good luck!

yes... bad turbo seals, turbos need replacement... there is no questions asked. My car smelled like oil, smoked and had identical symptoms, it was also drinking gallons of oil while never showing signs of decreased performance. BTW, my new turbos were whistling and wastegate rattling 20 minutes after being installed so do not be concerned with either of those items.

Also my actual oil loss is quite minimal, the car is not eating quart after quart like some folks here. I’m fairly confident that I’ve ruled out some of the usual suspects, and the oil filter housing isn’t leaking from anywhere I can see. Turbos are building and holding boost fine, zero rattle, zero unusual whine on moderate load. The joy of tracking down oil issues on N54s

It's bound to happen in any modded turbo car. Just replace/upgrade and be down with it! You gotta pay to play bro... GL
