So to secure it, maybe cut off the suction cup end at the desired length and attach the arm somehow to the ashtray insert.

I still like the idea of using the ashtray insert, if only because RealOEM has replacements for less than $10.
Just another idea for you to consider, there is the sunglasses tray that replaces the ashtray. You do lose the plug, but you could hard wire the unit to the wires from the plug. the sunglasses tray might give you a little more room.
look in the DIY section and search for "illuminated sunglasses tray" so you can
see pictures.

Hey I like your DIY xm radio, Just one question.
Did you hard wire your xm to the fuse box? The standard cig connector is much to large to close.
Thanks. If so, how? add a fuse?

I suction cup my Nuvi to the top of the ashtray lid for a long trip.
For short trips I jam the antenna in the air vent slot.

Im not sure if you are still monitoring this thread, but I was curiouis how you got the center panel off? Is there a FAQ that describes how to disassemble interior parts? I'm not interested in experimenting on my brand new 335.
