Oil level sensor malfunction? DIY replacement?

I have a low oil level indicator and I had the oil changed out about 8k-9k miles ago. I have all the stuff for an oil change and no ramps yet. Was going to order those soon for an oil change when this happened. Basically my questions are this:

If the oil level sensor is bad, is the only way to check it to drain and measure the oil in the car? Also, how hard is it to change an oil level sensor and can it be done on ramps instead of lift/jack stands? Lastly, can someone point me in the right direction for a DIY with pics for changing out the oil level sensor?

Thanks a bunch.

From another thread I found this: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=591029

and RealOEM shows this: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...64&hg=11&fg=10

Don't see any DIY, but once you remove all the shrouds it should be pretty straight forward.

Since the sensor is on the bottom of the pan I'm assuming you have to drain the oil out correct? Local shop says they won't have to...

Can someone tell me if you have to drain the oil before doing a level sensor replacement?

The Bentley manual says to drain the oil and be ready for oil to drip out when you remove the sensor.
