Question Experts: Another N52 Engine Noise Video

Ok I am hoping I am just getting paranoid being that the car is approaching 80k pretty fast. My engine, in my mind, seems to be making more noise. I took a quick video. Hoping some nice folks on here will have a listen and give me their thoughts.

Turn your AC on and off and see if the noise changes or stops.

Direct injection and the lovely sound of valves tapping .

Let me ask you, how do you drive this car normally?

Pretty average. I do not get on the gas hard often, but will once in awhile. I drive the car in normal drive mode using DS and Manual mode once in awhile as well. So with your comment do I not have anything to worry about?

There is your problem.. When i used to work at a used car dealer we had tons of n52 with tapping valves. Obviously the customers would always freak out so before the customer arrived we would always drive the car hard and the noise would go away.

I drove my personal n52 hard all the time and never heard my valves tap once 07 build.

Its just a theory but the cars owned by kids and driven hard never made any noise and the cars owned by the older crowd always tapped.

I will sure give it a shot. Besides the tapping did anything else stand out in my video clip?

I was in the same boat as you (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673829) and thought I had the famous N52 ticking valve problem. I took it to the dealer to complain and they actually replaced the rockers under CPO warranty. Problem was after the work my car was making the exact same noise. I think these engines just make this noise naturally, I wouldn't worry too much.

I drove my 06 325 hard as shit all the time, thing ALWAYS ran smooth and never had a tick sound of any kind. Ran perfect till the day I traded it in. Proof that these N52 LIKE to be driven. If they didn't they wouldn't of let it rev to 7 grand and have a 4yr 50k warranty with lol

Traded it in at 93,000 with not one noise and a couple of standard leaks that these have had but get repaired.

Well I drove it spirited last night in DS mode and now I have introduced a light clunking/clicking sound when shifting under acceleration. Seems to be during the lower gear shifting. I am very much stressing about this latest development. I should mention I have an automatic. Any tips, tricks, or other that might help with this issue is appreciated.

187,000 on mine and I track it still lol! Back to that sound in the video, I hear something whenever you had the camera near the intake manifold. You could have a small PCV or fuel vent leak. Have you ever gotten a gas cap loose message on your dash (or idrive)?

I don't find the sound that dissimilar to mine, I'm at 82,000 miles. Perhaps I should start driving my car harder as well, I redline it once or twice during a longer drive.

80K, has the transmission fluid ever been changed? If not, it might be wise to do so.

And at the next oil change, use Castrol Edge 0W30 (aka German Castrol), it will help with cold start lubrication, reducing that wear, especially during your cold WI winters.

I didn't think that N52's had direct injection..

I don't know if it has been changed or not. I was planning on doing it at 100k, but will probably move it up now. Also, do I need to replace the tranny filter or will a fluid change be enough? Here are the other items I am looking at doing:
  • Transmission drain and fill
  • Rear diff. drain and fill
  • New serp. belt
  • New spark plugs
  • Regular oil change and filter
