I've had my lifters changed nearly 1 year and 5,000 miles ago with no return of the tick. Do new lifters alone ever really fix it? By then I'll be into the CPO warranty I hope they do the repairs on their bill.

CPO would cover lifter and engine noise issues.

Help me folks - hard to read through 93 pages of messages.

I have a brand new 2011 328xi with about 500 miles. In the morning I go to the gym and get there early and sit in the car for about 10-15 minutes. Since it is cold I keep the engine running for some part of that time.
When parked and at idle I can hear a relatively loud ticking sound (similar to what my MINI used to make). If I bring the revs up past idle the sound goes away - back to idle I hear it again. Whenever at idle I can hear this ticking sound.
Am I having the problem described in this thread? Is that normal for these engines at idle?
Computer say oil is at max.

Thanks,

Update on our Z4 2008 with the metallic ticking noise. We lucked out. In Sept of this year we took our car to the dealer to let them hear the ticking noise. Lifters changed no questions asked. Last week, 3 months later, we heard the noise again, took the car to the dealer and they replaced the cylindar head with no fuss! Thanks to this post and DL's support of the issue on this post. Good luck to everyone still needing the problem fixed.

335i does not have this particular issue. N54/N55 is not the N52.

Thanks,
My SA stated the 2010 head was updated to fix this particular issue. Not to say that you do not have a problem in some form...Go back about 4 pages to date, and you may get a decent idea of this particular problem. If you click my sig. to utube this is what this problem sounds like ( I also have some reading that may help you too on the utube page ). Good luck going forward.

Strange on a 2011, but this problem is most noticeable at idle when the engine is warm.

06' 325i here. Pretty rare to get the tick, but it'll happen every once in awhile.

I'm still under CPO warranty so I took my car to the dealer to get multiple minor things checked out and I'm amazed at their service. I don't really have any video proof it exists and they haven't reproduced the ticking, but they're replacing all the lifters and rocker arms. We'll see if it returns.

if u guys are under warranty/cpo take it in asap. but make sure u have proof ie video of it happening (dont matter if u hear it after driving off or an hour later record the noise so when u do get ur appt and if the car is not making the tick u can verify with video.. also record the mileage and date of the most recent event) the only way to fix is this issue is to replace the cyl head and if you are out of warranty u can try and call bmwna and put a complaint and hopefully they can help you out if not then you are going to have to pay out of pocket..

i had my e92 for about 5 months now and the tick came after 2 months of ownership and got the heareplaceded about a month later all under warranty

good luck guys

First, thanks to everyone who has posted here. I'm a newb, from the subaru world, and have been thinking of upgrading to a used e90. All other maintenance issues aside, this engine ticking issue seems like a reason to not purchase a used e90 (unless its CPO).

My reading has found:

a) Some say using thicker engine oil works. Claiming BMW is using thinner oil, to increase fuel economy.
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=24
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...7&postcount=69

b) Some have changed to thicker oil, with no improvement.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=1776
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=850

c) The engine ticking does cause physical damage to the camshaft lobes, and I assume will limit the life of the engine (i.e., I should not expect a used e90 with high mileage (70,000+) to last much longer). Quite a change from previous generations, like the e46.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=112

d) Some have exprienced improvement after replacing the "Hydraulic Valve Pushrods".

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/arc.../t-397468.html

e) Some have replaced the "lifters", only to have the ticking return.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=2032

f) Guess I need to be ready to drop $7500 to get a new head with the new 'check valve' installed, that will keep the oil where it needs to be.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=1290

Question: Can you help me confirm, I should look into an e46, G37x, IS250 AWD, or just stay with my WRX??

...I'm not trolling, just looking to confirm the e90 is not the right car for someone who cannot afford to lease, and instead buys cars used with 50,000+ miles, and does his own maintenance.

Thanks, and happy holidays.

I am thinking you may have gave an answer to your own question. I give a two thumbs up on your research.

A design flaw with the N52, go with CPO if you want to deal with BMWNA with the fix if is needed. My SA was great in my case, it took six months but it was worth it. Mind you that every dealer is different. If you choose non CPO it is a roll of the the dice so to speak. I do not bet with those type of moneys.

A link on this thread by another member TooManyIDs has given the most logical answer, and provided the TSB by BMW on the issue.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=1310

This link below is dated but does give allot of information.

http://blog.bavauto.com/926/bmw-n52-...-tappet-noise/

Good luck on your choice, I went through the process under warranty, and my new head was the final fix. For most on this thread, they have seen this information as I posted it in the past, it is up to you.

BTW go with the 335i as the N54 will not have this problem, but the HPFP may come into play but has been noted with BMW with extended warranty. That is a thought...

Happy Holidays,

DL

Hi,

Would anyone mind sharing your dealer and SA? I took mine in Friday morning with a video clip - the lifter tick is extremely obvious in the video, but my SA said they are unable to do anything unless it can be duplicated. Would have been nice if he'd told me this when I was there showing the video, but chose to tell me via phone several hours after dropping the car off. Mine - as I believe are most - is sporadic. It doesn't always do it at cold start; will sometimes begin out of the blue when the engine is warm. It's frustrating that they are unwilling - say BMWNA will not authorize anything - to do anything when in the video it is extremely obvious - especially after reading about instances of SAs working with customers based on videos. My only option at this point is to leave my car with them indefinitely and hope it happens when they happen to start it up.

Thanks for the help and Merry Christmas,

Hi, I just got the same exact default codes on my 2008 335i BMW. p112D and p2298. What was the outcome of your svc work on your car last yr for these 2 error codes? Was one air intake? Thanks Nichol21

I've had this issue at times with my E46 and it's gone away right after noticing the oil level was low and topping it up. Hasn't happened in my E92 yet, but I haven't had low oil in it YET

I believe someone mentioned that if you park your car for a long period of time your car will tick. Let me share my recent experience. I live in Austin, Texas. The winter is mild here. I parked my car in storage for the past 3.5 months. Car was started and drove around the block 2 times during the 3.5 months period. Came home from my business trip and no ticking at all. I had the cylinder head replaced about 1 year ago.

I'll add my .02. My 2006 330i is also plauged with the "tick-tick-tick" lifter noise. It is currently at my dealer, BMW of Columbia (SC), for the 3rd time in an attempt to cure the noise. The first repair visit (they kept it a day) they replaced all of the exhaust valves, and declared it repaired, and charged me the $50.00 deductible. Nope. It went back a week later. They kept it 24 DAYS, and replaced a DESA valve (whatever that is), and declared it fixed. No charge except the gas I put in the loaner car. Nope. So here I sit, working my way through the dealership's stable of loaner cars.

I'm covered by CPO for a few more months, and then by a 36 month "platinum coverage" aftermarket warranty (got that for the navigation system coverage it promises) that I purchased for 4K with the car back in May. I really love the car, and I hope that the dealership will do the right thing and replace my engine head. I have videotaped the noise when it occurs (my SA, Daren, assures me that's not necessary since he's heard it intermittently), and I have forwarded selected snippets from this forum to him to let him know that I'm trying to be an educated customer, and not a whiny "just throw parts at it" bastard.

Fortunately, I don't live far from the dealership, and they're pleasant to deal with. I had a vaguely similar experience with a Mercedes C-280 15 years ago, and I swore up and down back then that I'd never have another one-sided love affair with a German car. I then had a Town Car (reliably dull), Lexus SUV (bulletproof, that), and a Prius (wonderful transportation appliance completely without soul) before trying a BMW. This 330i has been in the shop for almost a month (over several occasions), and I'm wondering (not very seriously at this point) if I should just go back to boring Japanese transportation.
Sigh...

my 06 sounds like a diesel...my tech said its definately the lifters and definately needs a new head...

honestly its the quietest when the engine is stone cold which from what i read on here is weird..

right now i'm using a slightly heavier oil and i hoped that would quiet it down..no avail

i will be doing this for the long haul i think so i'll keep people updated if i have a catastrophic failure..

if anyone else has just kept this problem but has quieted it down let me know what you did...i already had the lifters replaced and that did nothing

8 grand just isn't fieseable

and also...quick question

if your out of warranty i know you can't get another...but what about a 3rd party warranty...

drive it till it dies and have them fix it? a 3rd party warranty is 2K...thats 75% cheaper then 8K

I also had the ticking on my E92. They replaced the lifters...still there. Today they confirmed they need to replace the cylinder head... Thankfully CPO, except gotta pay stupid "deductible" on the CPO..$50. WTF.
