My Ride Home Today

One of the many things I love about this time of year is that the suns sets on my home way. It makes for spectacular skies and lots of photo ops.

Today I caught two sun dogs chasing each other around their master.

Later the sun dropped behind this copse of trees. A favorite spot of mine from last year.

Lastly, there was this farm as the last of the light was fading.

Thanks, David. It does make for a long commute, though. Today's adventures added a half hour to my normal hour-long drive. I'd stay longer watching and shooting the sunset, but then Wifey gets PO'd if she's waiting for me for dinner.

Only another week of this anyway. Once the clocks go back, it'll be dark on my way home.

Thanks, Guys. Just got a 40mm f2.8 pancake lens today. We'll see if it makes a good sunset lens on the ride home tonight.

More from today. This is the only week I get to grab these shots. This Sunday the clocks go back and it'll be dark coming home, at least on the southern half of my commute.

This was taken with the new 40mm pancake lens with a stacked CPL and 3-stop ND held in front of it.

My new Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (non-VC). Same stacked filters.

And the 70-300L at full zoom with just the CPL. Aside from a smidge of clarity slider and a bit of a crop, this is SOOC. Hey Baby, the sky's on fire.

Really? #1, huh? I'm surprised. I did like the pic, but that was just improvising with the 40mm that happened to be stuck on my camera at the time. I hesitated buying that lens, but for $150, you really can't beat it.

And thanks. The weather is supposed to be great (but cold) all week, so I'm hoping for more. I need to bring my 8mm FE tomorrow.

Yep, #1. Can't explain it, might be the ray of light effect coming off the sun, and the close framing of the tree silhouette, that makes it stand out.

Probably the last set. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and the clocks go back on Sunday. But it's been a great week for sunsets.

Neat skies. Love the sun dogs. Here's my sunset tonight, from my balcony:

Great shots! How are you liking that little 40?

I dont know how much use I'd get out of it with a 35f1.4 and a 50f1.2. but it is pretty light!

I put it on my T1i and it's more like a point-and-shoot now. It fits easily in a side pocket of my bag, so if I have a bigger lens on my 7D and need a wider shot, I can just grab the T1i/40mm.

I also have the 50mm f1.4 and the Roki 35mm f1.4. Plus my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 will shoot 40mm at f2.8 and the images are virtually identical to the ones from the 40mm pancake. If it weren't for the ridiculously cheap price of the 40mm, I wouldn't have bought one. But for a measly $150, it was no big deal.

I was thinking the same thing! Leave the 40 on the 7d for point and shoot fun.. but I've also got the fuji x100 for that

How do you like the roki? Heard good reviews..

It's quite sharp when you nail focus, which is easier to do with the 7D when the subject is close. For that reason it makes a good portrait lens.
