Regardless of who drives it, there needs to be at least one vehicle that can take everyone in the family on a road trip, or run daily errands.

When I got my car, my wife's only requests are: have four doors, can fit two child seats (if need be), and can fit our stroller in the trunk. These are not unreasonable requirements, as I would have made these guidelines myself before I started looking.

The wife doesn't really tell me what to do or dictate what I drive, but I'm sane enough to make the right decisions. Guys who get married and still need adult supervision will never end up being happily married. I often wonder why they lock themselves into a trap like that.
Man of the year! Wise and sound words brother. You are a true gentleman.

I am one of those guys that will park vehicles way out in the parking lot with nothing around me and someone will park next to me. If it's another high-end car I don't start sweeting it, if its a POS the panic starts. I had kid park next to me a few weeks ago in a new ford focus st. He happened to follow me out of the store, he said he parked next to me because he wanted to compare his cars to my 06 M5. After talking to him for a awhile he was truly convinced his car was comparable performance wise, I need to find and hire that salesman. Nice kid, so I took him for a ride and I guess you can figure out the outcome, everyone on this forum would have enjoyed the looks on his face. Still, no regard to why I parked way out in the middle of nowhere.

I agree! It seems like people just don't care if they slam their door into any vehicle, absolutely no respect for any vehicle including there own.

still remember the time at the mall when an asian lady in a mercedes opened her door into mine just as i was walking up to my car.. didn't say anything coz i had a girl with me and didn't want to have to dispose of her, as she would have witnessed my crime.
long story short, made an excuse to get something from the trunk after she got in the car, taped my cell to her undercarriage with duck tape. and found her and took care of it later.
find my phone app is awesome btw.

I'd get a fucking divorce before I'd drive a minivan. Being a castrated, thumb-sucking sissy man is not an option.

Just sayin'...

+1. Oh, and the divorce will really work out well. You end up losing half of your shit, and screw your kids up in the process. Great solution.

I just bought 2 vehicles in the past month and I didn't tell my wife until she saw it in the driveway.

I agree entirely. When we had our first child, I traded my SC G35 for a 335i. I thought the G35 would not fit a car seat and I never bothered to check (it does).

My most recent purchase, my wife had one requirement, if it fits two car seats and I will put the kids in the back, then get whatever I want. She did not have to place this requirement on me. It was really more of a thumbs up to do what I wanted.

So when I saw my TTRS sitting on the dealer lot, I said give me a test drive and if I am impressed, then we have to test the car seat. My sales guy got a kick out of it. The oversized car seat fits and the car is mine. I pick my son up from 1st grade almost every day and it is a hoot sitting in the car pool line with my fun car. My son is somewhat oblivious to the whole thing, which makes it even funnier. I hear the teacher yelling out "I love your car" and things like that and my son does not get it. Priceless!

Having said all that, we have an MDX for all the normal family stuff. No way that our family could function without at least a full sized sedan. Even my 335i would not have worked if that was our "big car" or one of two similarly sized cars.

Exactly.
This guy should take his wife on a trip to India and see how a family of 5 is riding on a freaking motorcycle.

Your not ready for marriage, and if you are married I hope you mature before it self-destructs. Here is a good test. Don't even think about it until your opinion on this changes. You will be miserable and just wind up divorced anyway. I never had to get a mini-van, but I would if I thought it was necessary for the family.

Marriage is not all peaches and cream, but I have yet to see a better way to experience all the various facets of the human condition.

And yet, Dad is part of the family too. If Mom thinks the family needs a minivan, then SHE should be the one driving the minivan.

Though why a child or two needs a rolling two-bedroom ranchhome escapes me. My Mom managed to cart around my brother an I in a mid-70's 911 for much of my formative years. Dad's car was a Pontiac Grand Prix - also a car not known for back seat spaciousness, and I was 6' tall when I was 13.

Funny the wife and I have raised two children (ages 17 and 19) and never had any vehicle bigger than a VW Jetta. We have also never owned a vehicle with an automatic transmission. I really don't understand why people think they need a Van or a Station Wagon or even a sedan just because they have kids. A family of four fits in a 2+2 just fine and you get to enjoy the drive.

you sound like you're 12 years old; i'd wish my wife would make me buy a minivan. i'll take an Odyssey over our MDX any day. make my life easier, hauling kids and all the stuff associated with them.

then i can still drive my other three cars when i wanna not feel like a "castrated thumb-sucking sissy man".

You know that all depends on woman you marry, I have pretty amazing wife she relatively lets me do whatever I want n doesn't bitch really at all even with my detailing of car almost every weekend.

Ill let you all non-married guys in on this secret...If your g/f bitches even slightest bit while your not married you can double if not tripple that behavior when your married. Mine didnt complain at all now sense were married once in while she is like blah blah I wana go out but for most part I still get to do whatever I want.

Take it or leave the advice but its good.

7 day old and now it's "fugly" ... Couldn't agree more...if OP is doing this for his wife at least he should drive a non dented vehicle...

Tough luck... Lets hope he gets the van repair... OR trade it in for an X1, X3, X5 or X6... That's what I would do
