Squealing Heater/Fan
This one comes and goes.
It seems to be more prominent when I first start off - even with the blower/fan at a low speed setting, I have a quite loud squeaking sound coming out of it! It's a bit like chirping crickets. Goes off after a while, and then seems to return a little intermittently, even with the fan at the same speed. Car is a 2007 E90 330i. Any suggestions?

i had this on mine too, but warranty covered it. when i was researching about it i did find a DIY somewhere... its basically a dry bearing on the fan blades. A little oil and it will fix it but its the pain of having to remove it to do it.

I find it so much easier to use google sometimes rather than logging in here creating a post and waiting for replies.
I don't mean to be a prick but there is extensive content regarding this issue already on the site. All you gotta do is look it up under the search feature or google. But to answer your question, as mentioned above the fan bearing is on its way out. At the moment the fan could work for years to come with an occasional noise or it could stop working all together. It usually dies out on people in the winter time when it is the coldest and you can't really do a diy outside. Your options are to either replace the fan altogether (not that pricey) or take it out and lubricate the fan shaft and bearing with some turbine oil. Make sure the oil doesn't have a foul smell because that smell will be blowing into your cabin for a little while. Cheers man. Last edited by Wolf 335; 07-11-2016 at 11:56 AM.. |

Thanks chaps.
I've been out of the E90 loop for some years, and so am still getting to grips with the basics. I found other heater stuff beforehand, but wanted a specific model answer before I proceed. The car is still under a used car warranty until October - might be worth a go. Although technically the heater is still working, just squeaking. I know how many parts are classed as 'wear and tear'...... |

If you can, take and audio recording of the noise and show the service advisor. And tell them that it has been working on and off plus the noise. |

Quick solution
Hi
Now, I had this although mine sounded like a little bird under the dashboard! Chirping and tweeting particularly in left turns. I managed to get to and lubricate the spindle in the fan by removing the pollen filter housing. I then got a long screwdriver, placed this on to the top of the rusty spindle and ran some 3 in 1 oil down the screwdriver and onto to spindle. No noises since... Bit of a fiddle, but much easier than removing the glovebox etc to access the fan. Worth a try, although you need three hands and six fingers on each one! |

have you ever smelled a burnt wire smell, kind of like speakers being over worked?
i had the squeal, then burning smell on and off then the fan when out. blower motors have planned obsolescence |

Considering OP is still under warranty, I would just get the whole unit replaced. |

Never had any burning smells - just the on/off chirp. Always when you first start off it's worse, but it comes and goes - annoyingly.
Contacted the garage today to get it booked in under a warranty repair, taking it in on Sunday. Many thanks for the advice guys - it's pushed me into getting it sorted...hopefully before it stops altogether. TBH I had no idea it may do that - I had a E36 318iS that had the same issue, and given that, had become accustomed to living with it!

Just wanted to mention that it's in and getting replaced now under warranty. Great!
Also having new headlight washers at the same time (also covered) as they were suffering from the 'various states of retraction' fault.
