My noise is completely gone!!! It's been long gone for two weeks now! Idk if this will work for everyone but i noticed that #3 in the picture below was broken and I guess that was causing a vacuum leak? I ordered a new one and when I went to install it I also noticed that #4 was not connected at all. I know it's a long shot but I think this may help someone! I can't believe my lifter noise is gone
was a pain to remove the intake manifold but it was worth it! Sorry no pictures since I didn't expect to make a DIY out of it. |

one broken and the other one was loose. apparently those have something to do with oil pressure so they were causing my car to tick. I am almost positive all ticking issues are related to this one way or another. Maybe BMW has missed it because they sometimes try to over-engineer everything.
It's been almost a month now, not a single tick. I've tried to hard to hear it and I hear nothing |

so does this mean that TSB was wrong in replacing heads and lifters? or have you already been through the whole process and found this additional issue that you just took care of on your own?

could be two different issues that cause the ticking.. If the crankcase breather hoses are broken, it will affect pressure in the cylinder head, and will affect how oil flows. Sounds like that was xxxjecxxx's issue.
The lifters appear to be a separate issue that affects the oil flow and causes ticking.. FWIW, the 328i's don't have the same PCV hoses like the 325i and 330i, their PCV system is more integrated into the cylinder head cover. |

out of warranty so never got the head replaced, I spent months looking for a solution and tried that. Lucky for me it worked,I'm pretty happy, i was going to sell it because of the ticking.

when comparing a 328 and 325. far as i can remember, i thought the two had same engine...
either way i am getting my car back from the SA on monday so i will post the service record and what all was done trying to fix the issue. and i will also try and take a look at the hose replacement you just did as well.

here is what i got with the car today
WHAT HAPPENED: 1 among a lot of things, the ticking issue was fixed... well step 1 is. next is head replacement if this does not work out. 2 replaced the radio head unit. due to screen fading in the heat/sun. got the updated HD radio which is upgrade from my 2008 version that came with the car. 3 new wipers. yay... 4 A/C cleaned out... doesnt seem like the filter was changed out though. must be part of the 15k or annual maintenance. 5 oil change. do not know if this was from replacing the lifters. WHAT DID NOT HAPPEN: 1 i also asked to replace the rotors but, did not happen. 2 i asked for 15k annual maintenance, did not happen. (i was 2,657 miles away, minimum is 2000 miles.) 3 seat belt arm (rattle) fix did not happen. (could not reproduce the problem) here is the write up for the TICKING FIX. if anyone needs it.

from what i know is from 2009 3 series and up had the HD RADIO as standard.
mine is an 2008 and did not have the HD radio, but after getting the part replaced i noticed it was HD because the HD came on where ST used to come on. although the only channel that i could get HD is 97.9... and even that goes on and off from HD to ST if you go under a bridge or parking garage. so my guess is they just had one laying around or BMW just mass produces these and non HD head units arent made anymore. and yes i did have satellite radio before.

Would love a DIY...
xxxjecxxx -
I know you talk about not creating a DIY at the time of your fix, but I'm sure the rest of us would highly appreciate a re-creation of the fix in a DIY. Whadda' think? If you ever get some time, would you replicate the fix? Just a thought. Cheers. |

xxxjecxxx, does ur problem remain fixed?
I've seen a N52B25 (2500cm3) for sale, but not sure if this model have the same problem of ticking (loosing oil on the lifters..) than the N25B30 (3000cm3)... This engine fits on the BMW bolletin, as it's from 96 and it's a N52, but on the other hand, the improved new heads shown on the bolletin are just for B30, it means for the 3000cm3... Thanks! |

Addressing my slight lifter tick with a trio: liqui moly engine flush, molygen 5w-40 oil change, and some of the liqui moly lifter additive. So far it made a nice improvement.
The car does have 269,XXX miles on it and who knows when the last time the oil was changed by the previous owner. So not sure how much the flush and additive contributed vs. the fresh oil change. |
