325d running temp, and mpg

Hi

I have had ownership of my 2007 325d for a couple of months. On my daily commute which is 50/50 start stop in traffic and an A road at 60mph i am getting 38.7 mpg. I have no idea if this is good or not. I checked the temperature from the hidden menu and its around 70 degrees. I thought this was low and after some reeading up i asked my local indie to change the EGR stat first. They checked and said that it didnt need doing???

Am i worrying for no reason?

No because it should be getting to 88 degrees centigrade. You should of got both stats checked as suspect your main coolant thermostat has failed.

You should be seeing over 40mpg on a commute like that....

It is nearly always the main stat that needs changing to make a decent difference to the temperature.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with the MPG the OP is getting, he's in stop start traffic with a bit of A road thrown in, the stop start is gonna kill the MPG and the A road is only going to bump it back up a bit IMO, also I don't think the engine will get to full temp in them conditions, I'd take it on a motorway drive and then see what temp you are getting upto and then take it from there

TBH I dont think you have any issues at all!

I barely get 30mpg! I don't think I've ever seen my MPG go up that high.

Mine gets to 92c in 10 mins just driving in town after I changed the main stat.

Thanks for the posts and help. I will take it for a bash on the motorway this weekend and see what temperature i get upto. I will see how much the indie will charge for the main stat change, i have heard it takes a day to do. If not too expensive i will get it changed and report back if it has made a difference.

Hi, my weekly driving is 65 mile A Road commute with 4miles stop start nonsense Mon morn/Fri evening and 10mins to and from work during the week and I was getting 44.5mpg. I bought a bottle of STP diesel injector cleaner and added it to a full tank of diesel and I'm now getting 50.4mpg. I know it will settle down around 47 mpg eventually but but you should be getting more than 38.7. Give it a go and see. Stop start is a killer though...
