Real World vs. RealOem... OUCH!

So I was in the stealership for some CPO warranty service (at least... I hope it's CPO stuff, I'll know tomorrow) and thought I'd take the opportunity to grab a couple of parts.

I asked for two wiper arm covers (61 61 7 138 990).
RealOem type price: $2 each.
Real World Stealership price: $8.50 each, 425% markup.

I asked for two E91 roof rail delete mouldings (51 13 7 122 871 and 51 13 7 122 872).
RealOem type price: $67.64 each
Real World Stealership price: $162 each, 240% markup.

I needed the covers and sucked it up, but declined the mouldings.
I was happy to hear he was physically able to order a Euro part... but I didn't expect to pay for his flight over there to pick them up! Ha.
Looks like I'll be back online looking for a supplier.

Sticker Shock.

try getbmwparts.com.

Decent prices on OEM parts. You can look up prices by part number.

If they are like domestic dealers there is more then one price for a part. Registered service people get a discount walk-ins don't get. The mechanic can then mark the price back up to the walk-in price when he bills the customer.

Unfortunatly, a lot of those places don't ship north of the border.

Canadian dealer prices on parts are rediculous. Should have a sign in each dealership that says "Free tub of vaseline with EVERY purchase!"

That's silly. It should read "invoice billed with tub of vaseline ($15.00) with every purchase."
Please. FREE stuff from the dealership?

Wires,

Where are you in Canada?
Close to the border or not?
If you are close to the border.

Look up the closest Mail boxes Etc.
Set up account, get it shipped there and have it shipped to them, then just go pick it up.

Their fees are very nominal.
Like 2.75 per package and 10 for year also.

Regards,
DN.

No, I'm a bit of a drive from the border. I do have a buddy that does that. He doesn't mind driving (makes a road trip out of it).

Sorry, good point, my dealer doesn't give anything away from free.

Tischer is awesome. Trouble is you get killed with shipping for whatever savings you gain on low priced items.

Agreed - thebmwpartstore.com had it for even less, but when I inquired they said they wouldn't ship it (anywhere - pickup only) as they (roof rail mouldings) are very fragile pieces. Bummer. I will check again with getbmwparts, see if they are comfortable shipping them!

---
UPDATE:
aaaand then I notice that Driprail moldings (which I'm guessing the roof rail bits fall under) require a flat rate shipping fee of $110. That makes them about the same as ordering from my local dealer, unless the price is per item, and then it is much more. Bummer. Looks like I need to drive them home myself from someone close enough to the border to make it worthwhile.

Does the Ontario price in GST, PST, VAT, other tax etc., etc., etc. Maybe that is the difference. At least the healthcare is FREE! Just joking around. I love Canada. When I go to Toronto to visit my relatives I pick up a couple of cases of Molson and LaBatts before I leave Maryland. It is funny that they make it in Canada, ship it 750 miles and sell it for 1/3 the price.

My understanding is car companies just set the price, and that's what it is. In our good natured Canadian attitude, we just bend over and take it.

With NAFTA free trade, I'd assume import taxes from Germany to Canada or the US should be pretty similar. (I could be wrong though). I know stuff like ATV's get manufactured in Canada and magically get a 30% reduction when they cross the line. (See point #1 above. )

The gov't does a beautiful job ensuring it's almost impossible to buy a new car from the US. Would be nice if they are screwing you on the new car price, then at least the parts are reasonable....
