Now that JB4 is off, would I be able to read the shadow codes thru the store OBD scanner from OReily or Advance Auto? I did one reading but it didn't get any code.

General obd code readers will only detect hard active CEL codes. You would need a BMW specific scanner to see more of them.

A Bavarian Technic cable can read all the codes your dealers can.

Can BMW dealer read it thru odb port without taking off stuff? I really dun want to spend another diagnosis fees and there is no code at all.

My BMW dealer does absolutely nothing for me if there is no check engine light, however if you get a half engine light and it goes away after, it will be stored in the DME and they will be able to see the history of codes.

If you cleared codes with jb4 and no issues have reoccurred, and there have been no CELs or temporary CELs, then it would just be a waste of time. IMO.

Edit: I noticed you mentioned the tech talking about auto clear, mine was on and it never cleared my water pump codes when it failed.. Did you read codes with your jb4 after? And did u notice that your oil temp might have been too high those days, maybe it was just an overheat after hard driving if u dont have an oil cooler.

A quick update : the code reappeared and they finally replaced both water pump and T-stat. The whole thing is closed to $1300 and luckily fully covered under my extended warranty. But i still need pay $200 for the materials and diagnostic fees.

Funny thing is that the SA was telling me how the previous codes were all caused by the JB4 in the morning, and then my car overheated on my way home in the evening and I got stranded on a busy bridge in the worst spot at the worst time, for 30 mins! Then, they took my car in the next day and give me a loaner.

Here is where you can find a lot of information if you ever need it.

So, to confirm, If I clear the codes this way with the steering wheel controls the dealer will have no knowledge that I had the jb4 installed? I am taking the car to the dealer for a suspected water pump/thermostat.

Do 1:2 in the steering controls, that will delete all codes, put it in map 0, remove jb4. This will delete all codes including any waterpump/tstat one you may have.

I disconnected my battery and went through all of the steps to put it on, to take it off. Reconnected battery, voila. Don't forget, if you have AWD, the 4x4 light will come on, it's not an issue, it will go away when you start driving.

Remove, have codes deleted, go to dealer. If you're out if warranty don't.

I have the BMW diagnostic program on my laptop (same thing the dealer uses) and it can read the last 20-30 codes that were thrown. I'll have to double check on that number but when I had my starting issues I looked into that section and it popped up a huge list of numbers relating to faults

Very true as it just happened to me. Any little mod you do they will put it back on you and YOU pay for the diagnostics of $300+. I thought an idling issue might be plugs, coils, etc. but no. The tech actually REMOVED JB4 to retest. Codes and fault were everywhere so they knew it. They were cool about it because it didn't blow up my engine. If my engine blew then bye-bye warranty. I didn't since I only had 2 months left on it anyway. So... Oil change, brake fluid and cabin filter, etc. all under warranty. No harm, no foul just $300 out of my pocket. Should have removed it but...

Turns out my tech is a cool mofo. We talked a bit and I said I can't admit anything but we both know you're not stupid. Sorry for wasting your time, I'm sure it would have been good info to have. Bought him a 12 pack and said thank you.

He doesn't see any correlation between my issue and whatever possible tune may or may not have been on it.

And we all lived happily ever after.

Enjoy a much slower driver to the dealer

Mike
When you say clear them from your steering wheel, do you just mean to go to the stock setting in your jb4 menu?
