BOV Cons

Any detrimental short term or long term aspects to having a BOV installed? Can they be easily installed/removed?

It is a semi-easy install. I would say just get a dual cone intake and you will get the sound you are looking for with an easier install/uninstall.

I have the dual cone intake and it gives me very nice sound and its not SOO loud and its not so quiet. You cna def. hear it.

And even my MOd friendly dealer suggested that BOV's are one of the mods i should try to stay away from for future warranty issues. Not sure why.

This is my understanding (mostly from other turbo cars but i think it applies to ours): when the air gets to the turbo it has already been measured by the MAF so when the BOV vents the air to the atmosphere, there is less air in the system than what the ECU thinks should be there. Consequently there is fuel added for the "phantom air" which has just been let out and you are temporarily rich.

EDIT: Versus a stock recirculating valve which dumps the extra built-up pressure back into the intake. That way it still goes into the engine as the ECU expects.

Well if there's no MAF then I don't know why the engine would run rich. Never mind.

Cons...other than the fact that it doesn't add any power, is one more (ok, two) part that can break and screw up your engine (turbos), need to remove them before BMW service and cost in the neighborhood of $400?

I've not installed them on a 335 yet but I can't imagine they are very difficult to install (caveat- there's supposedly some plastic vacuum nipple that's easy to break when swapping them).

Personally I find them really annoying- kinda like a 4" fart-can muffler on a stock civic.

I guess you really gotta like the sound of a BOV.

+1 BOV on our cars DO sound ok but i personally like the deep stock diverter valve sound alot more. With a slight kick of AFE to it. Makes it perfect sound.

I personally like the sound they make...and I already have the DCI setup..I've read that Vishnu recommends against them, mostly because the air is designed to recirculate back into the intake, and not be let out into the atmosphere.

Some like that noise to warn people that they have a turbo charged car! From what I hear from people that have BOVs, it becomes very addictive to hear that release of pressure!

We don't have a MAF sensor on the car so there is no metering of the air. BMW calculates fueling using the speed density method by using the MAP sensor, temperature and the known volume of the intake, etc. Venting a BOV to atmosphere will not be detrimental. That said, some factory BOVs are designed to leak boost slightly. The Mazdaspeed3 is a good example of this. Replacing the factory BOV actually gained over 15 whp on that car.

As for the sound, it is kind of addictive - like when your blowing the doors of an STI, SRT-8, etc but can also be annoying - like when your driving mother in law to dinner...

Personally, I love it and I can't wait to put the cp-e/tial kit on my 335i.

Not quite. In the case of the BMW, we recommend against them because we've seen then either leak or be sprung too tight. Both of which will add stress to the turbos, decreasing their life measurably.

This isn't to say that all bov/bypass vales are bad. I'm running Forge bypass valves on my car (with the softer spring) and they seem to work just fine.

Of course, so do the stock ones.
