Question for N57 (325d / 330d auto owners) - noise normal?
Hi -
Had a question as am not familiar with autos and have just received my LCI 325d coupe. I am loving the silky smooth straight 6 and coming from a 4 cylinder 320d coupe manual, I'm amazed by the fact that it barely sounds like a diesel I have however noticed a noise from the cabin and not sure if its normal and whether its just the torque convertor or the diesel injectors. Basically upon harder acceleration or kick down I hear a kind of rustling/diesel like noise from 1,500rpm up to 3,000rpm. If I progressively accelerate, it does not make the same noise. If I rev in park or neutral (to the same RPM) the noise is not replicated either. This rules out it being a turbo or timing chain related noise. It sounds like a torque convertor or injector noise but am not sure. I think I remember hearing the same noise in a diesel auto I had as a loan car from bmw before, but just wondering if its normal - can anyone have a listen to their auto and confirm if theres does it too? |

I think I get a similar noise to you I have a pre Lci 330d auto. I think I get it aswell never noticed it as such I.e as a problem, I'm a technician anyway and it's sounds fine and not alarming to me.
One thing that could make a similar noise to what I hear is possible injector failing and knocking slightly! But again mine is not like that. I have heard an engine with injectors not spraying correctly and mine don't sound like that. |

Cheers for the reply, just wanted to put my mind at rest that all is ok. The car has only done 16k miles so I wasnt expecting it to be anything major. I guess to some extent the injectors will be noiser when the car is under significant load. Its under warranty so will keep an eye on it. If it was the 320d id say its normal but the more refined, N57 engine is so quiet, its probably making this noise stand out more.

there is a big issue on N47 timing chain (fail). There's a Puma bmw leflet for this.
Some say it might be the case for the N57 too, but there's not many chain failure on this N57 engine. |

My old E92 was a 320d / N47 engine and it unfortunately had the timing chain issue (was just noisy didn't actually fail) so know what it sounds like and the symptoms e.t.c. The noise i mentioned is definitely not that at all. Its actually just the injectors when under load and upon test driving a brand new one it does this too. |

Its definitely not normal. Ive been driving it for 90 000km and it was very quiet. Ill try and make a video clip but im not sure how to download it? My fuel economy is much worse. It now has 160 000km.

See french forum bmw-one.fr
The parts bmw changes on the N47 are the same on N57 There is less timing chain issue on N57 (maybe because of 6L stability) but it may occurs at about 100000 miles. Currently I only know the official Puma page for the N47 |
