335d to M3
Has anyone made this change before?
Considering it as one of the new car options. Just feeling im missing something in the 335d but not sure what. Did you notice a big fun factor increase? Only down side half the mpg? |

There really is no comparison. Ignoring the obvious difference in running costs, the M3 does everything better. Everything.

I made the transition earlier in the year.
The 335d was my first car over 180bhp and I loved it. A great mix of power and economy, but once you've had it for a while, it lacks that 'wow' factor (although, for me, it did have it to start with). The M3 is a different animal - it requires a bit more driving (the 335d's such an easy car to waft about in). Yes there are down sides (mostly cost), but it does make up for it in fun, handling, road presence, exclusivity and noise. I now average 20mpg compared to 34. Straight line speed may not be too impressive when comparing the two (especially a mapped 335d), but it's so much more exciting getting there. It was an itch I wanted to scratch, but I'm so glad I did it.

read an article on m3 saloon including a run through france, the writer noted he would probably have done it quicker in a diesel as he would not have kept stopping to fill up with fuel, as an aside the 335i with the performance exhaust sounds fantatstic is cheaper almost as fast as an m3 and better on fuel BUT its not an m3, a case of you cant have everything

hmmm it is tempting and did see a nice red m3 up here for sale for only 27k
Is the m3 10k better than a 335d? Is it only faster at the top end or is it faster all the way through the rev range. RS4 quattro over winter is also tempting me as I imagine the m3 has the same traction issues ? |

Are you looking at a manual?!
Better diff and manual will help throughout winter compared to the auto torque monstah denz! Overall the M3 is much better. It's an occasion to drive and it's an M3 nuff said. A mapped 335d can keep up on a roll but still will never be an M3! If the itch is there, FACKIN scratch it MoFO

You might not get on so well with an M3 as a daily driver, they are harder work over the 335d and 335i in heavy traffic.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, take the M3 for a LONG test drive. |

I wouldn't say the M3 was bad, but given the 335d is only available with an auto box, I though it might not suit everyone. Unless it was an M3 with DCT, which although didn't suit me, does some others.

I went from an LCI 330d Msport to an 'LCI' M3 saloon with DCT
Differences: (all IMHO) M3 fuel costs are double M3 Tax costs more than double Insurance is about a 1/3 more expensive Noise of V8 is immeasurably better DCT quite literally pisses on the 330d auto box The ride on EDC on 19's is far better than the 330D MSport on 18 RFT's MDM mode allows a fair bit of slip (oppo requried) without risking the hedge too much Seats far more comfortable Leather far nicer Wing mirrors don't look stupid Low down grunt is not as immediate at the 330, but not exactly poor. The M3 more than makes up for it over 5000 rpm. THe M3 saloon looks massively more agressive than the standard MSport saloon. The M3 feels special every time. The diesel feels, well, nice, but not special. |

Go for the M3. I've loved my diesel Beemers...but if I weren't so bloody tight, i'd have the new competition pack M3 outside. Now. I'll just wait a couple of more years and get the bulk of depreciation out of the way
My last car was a petrol (remapped mk5 GTi) and if you can overlook the diesels superior torque and have the patients for the top end grunt - then go for it. I sold it because it was costing me £70 a week to do c250 miles! |
