Just bought some 19x8 for front and 19x9 for back. What size tires and brand do u recommend? don't want to break the bank but don't want to be cheap either. thanks in advance for the advice.

OEM size are 225/35/19 + 255/30/19, but you can also use 235/35/19 + 265/30/19.

The same thing applies.
There are no differences that would prevent you from running those sizes.

The biggest OEM come in was 18". I know that newer (2011+ ?) models have 19" as an option on the 3-series (I just came from the dealer this morning and was looking at 335i with 235/35r19 fronts and 255/30r19 rears) but I dont know if that is backwards-applicable to my year...

With an xi you have to make sure your tire revs per mile are within 5 front to back. (Some people say you can have up to 1% variance, some people think it should be 3 RPM variance front to back)

I have 19x8 and 19x9 and run 225/35/19 F and 265/30/19 R on Hankook V12's, but that size is specific to that model tire. If I would have gone with Conti DW then I would have purchased 235/35/19 F and 265/30/19 R based on that specific tire model.

Sorry I don't follow you. How is 225/35r19 specific to a Hankook tire? Any manufacturer in that size will be that size, right?

Yes, any manufacturer can produce in that size, but their specs will be slightly different. For example the Hankook V12's are rated at 816 revs per mile whereas the Cont DW is rated at 818 revs per mile - both in a size 235/35/19. For an xi/x-drive it's important to keep the front and back revs per mile as close to equal as possible to keep the transfer case happy.

I understand; but doesn't that just support the notion of not mixing manufacturers between front and rear tires? If you have same manufacturer, and keep the ratios properly, you should never encounter that issue. Right?

Correct, you just have to keep the ratios inline.

My point is that overall diameter of a XXX/35/19 size tire will vary. For example, let's say you want to get Hankook V12's all around. You've already determined your rear size (doesn't matter what size in this example.) If you're debating between a 225/35/19 or 235/35/19 in the front, the revs per mile are rated at 823 and 816 respectively. This is a relatively large difference when some people want to keep their their front to back ratio within 3 RPM.

So you're saying all this is to, what, keep xDrive from thinking the % difference is some kind of slippage and it tries to transfer drive from rear to front?

Yes. If it contiually thinks it's slipping and having to adjust it will wear out the transfer case very quickly. There's a lot of documentation on this forum about people having the incorrect tire sizes and having it cause issues with the transfer case.

I agree that might be an issue.. but your example (823 rpm versus 816 rpm) is only a difference of 0.85%, surely that can't be enough to freak out the computer?
