I finally ordered some wheels
I ordered the Advan RS wheels in Gunmetal for my 335i coupe. My question is whether there is a better performance tire for the money than a Dunlop Direzza SS Z1? I am looking for something for track use about 4 times a year and since it rains about never around here I want something to grip the road nicely. Right now that is the tire I am looking at getting for this set of wheels. The Advan wheels are nice and light. At 17 lbs/18 lbs that is tough to beat.

I've got the same wheels! They are spectacular. I'm planning on new tires some time in the near future, and the Z1 Star Specs are on the short list. Bridgestone RE-01Rs were on the short list too, but those are discontinued. The replacements are probably just as good, if not better.
I don't think you can go wrong with the Dunlops though.

For the bang for the buck track tire, i would suggest staying with the Z1 SS's. If you are looking for something with slightly better grip, take a look at the Toyo R1R. Im currently running those at the track and i love them.
The new RE11 has just been released as well, but no one has actual real world track testing on those yet. Maybe you should be the first! -Charles@VMRWheels

ARe the Toyo R1R an R compound tire? I was trying to avoid getting an R compound tire at this point.

Advan AD08, Nitto NT05, Bridgestone RE11.
I've been nothing but impressed with my NT05's so far. I've tried many tires, including the RE01R's, and the NT05's are still hands down my favorite. Although i have a new set of track wheels coming in and i really want to try out the Z1 SS or the new RE11 on them. They've been getting nothing but great reviews. I also wish the AD08's would come out here in the US already. Heres my track day review of the NT05's http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188261 |
