I just installed a blacked out grill. The easy way is to use a rubber spatula (you know, from your kitchen) and put two of those along the top and push. That should break the top clips free and after that its a matter of grabbing the grill and pulling it out. Thats my two cents worth.

Oh yeah, thats on an E90 328i.

Urrgggg ..... couldn't pull the lower grill off. Too afraid that it would break !!!

No broken tabs here

For my past e36, the tip was to wrap your hand with a towel or shirt and punch the grille right in the center and it popped right off. worked like a charm haha

the oem plastic parts are pretty strong. not too brittle
