Dropped steering rack, now steering wheel 90degrees off, what gives?!?!

So I was replacing my power steering pump, and thought it a bright idea to drop the steering rack, I mean Ive done it multiple times to install/remove dp's. Soooooo, upon reinstalling I notice the steering wheel is now 90 degrees off. My alignment guy said to deal with this before he tries to align, as his explanation was that 1 way turning would be fine, but the other direction will not have as much movement. As I said, I have dropped the rack more than a few times on mine, and friends cars, but never had this happen. What could I have done??? Thanks.

I'm ignorant to the process of dropping a steering rack, so this might be a dumb but I figure it won't hurt to ask; it is possible that your steering wheel got turned while the rack was dropped and then never got straightened out before you bolted the rack back up?

Definitely not dumb. Highly possible that I moved the wheels while trying to wrangle the rack back in, but again the multiple other times doing DP's this never happened. That is the head scratcher for me. FML.

Coincidence?
Since you are mechanically inclined to do all of this work by yourself the fix should be easy task.
Disconnect everything, center the wheels, center the steering wheel and put it together.
My whole front subframe was dropped, well only lowered, for turbos replacement.
Now the steering wheel is off by 15/20 degrees although the steering rack was untouched.
Is probably because the subframe is not at exactly the same position as previously.
So millimeters at the subframe will reflect drusticly at the steering wheel.
I'm sure you will sort it out in no time!

RESOLUTION: I hope this never happens to anyone else, but in case it does. Here is what happened to me...Turns out having active steering means there is an electrical connector attached to the top driver side portion of the rack, which I severed the connection to when messing with the rack while it was unbolted and lowered a few inches. I fixed the plug with some clever ingenuity, and steering wheel makes its way back to center on start up.

Active steering needs to be restarted and initialized after a wheel alignment? What kind of alignment?
I never knew that. I have never seen my Indy do that after a wheel alignment, unless I missed it.

I really don't think that is true. Why would active steering need to be reset if you are just adjusting the toe a little and you have the steering wheel locked? And what is active steering have to do with aligning the rear wheels?

It is true but can be done without it.

First off your toe adjustment even just a little can change where your steering wheel sits and the active steering is primarily looking at the steering angle.

Secondly the your front wheels are aligned to the rear wheels so by changing the rear will greatly effect the front. That's the reason why when you do an alignment you align the rear first

I've had cars that the steering wheel was hardly off aligned it and it was fine and others I had to reinitialize after because going down the road it bugged out.

Very interesting, thanks. What is "bugged out" mean? The steering wheel was off-center? I think this might have happened to me. I got another alignment a couple of week ago, and everything was fine the first mile or 2, and then I felt something and the steering wheel went off center all of a sudden. I thought maybe they didn't tighten the tie-rod nut, but it could have been the active steering.
