winter tyres - anywhere got them in stock?

hi all, after seeing the downpour on the weekend and now deciding winter tyres would be a good idea (seeing as i've got a 300 mile trip back home to Cornwall lined up for tomo night!) nowhere has any in stock!

called loads of places without success - can anyone suggest ANYWHERE which has 18's in stock, can travel most places on the north side of the M25 but i need to get them fitted tomo!!

The forecast looks as though you should be ok to get down to 'God's chosen land' tomorrow evening on your 'summer slicks'. It may be worth making a few calls to tyre places down here and get them fitted over Christmas.

Also, winter rubber takes a couple of 100 miles of wearing in before it starts to work properly.

Event Tyres still show some stock:

They can do next day fitting as well if you catch them early enough. 225/40/18 all round is OK on m-sport wheels.

tried that. i've been looking for the tyres to fit my stock alloys - nowhere has the rear 255/35 18's in. so i'd need to get alloys too. and that puts the price up a hell of a lot

For staggered setups I found it near impossible trying to get the sizes I needed a few weeks ago. I had to wait nearly two weeks for them to be imported from Germany although I was specific about the brand and model.

I suppose it depends on sizes and whether you are willing to accept any brand but the ETyres fitter that fitted mine this past week said its the busiest winter he's ever known and winter tyre sales are through the roof with the only thing putting the brakes on sales being a lack of fitters and tyres to sell.

i bought 245/40/18's to replace the 255/35/18's in the vredesteins extreme wintracs. no change to the wheels. 2000 miles later, am trying to get the car to misbehave and it wont, touch wood!!! Unlike our pathetic excuses of politicians, I saw the long range weather forecast and bought ahead via mytyres 6 weeks ago.

Did that trip during the day today. Only place that was any trouble was the A30 around Okehampton - freezing fog meant I had to slow right down. Otherwise, the roads are actually in surprisingly clear condition.

Should be no problem at all.

I am running 225/40/18 all round on 8J (front) and 8.5j (rear) MV3's.

Thanks for that I have sourced some Dunlop winter sport 3D for £700 all in is there any insurance implications with fitting different size tyres.

And has anyone used the dunlop 3Ds I have just seen they came out number 1 in the 2010 winter tyre tests

Yeah I've run 3Ds before and they're not bad at all - little noisy, but you can live with that (and if not, just turn the stereo up ).

Re sizes, you really should tell your insurers, though it's apparent that most seem to be using it as a way to extort more money - that said, it's better than them using it as a reason to not pay out...

checked with insurers (Octagon) and no charge for changing to winters or changing the sizes from standard...
