raised rev limit to 7500.
I've been studying the dyno graphs you all have posted after getting tunes. I was wondering, has any one tried raising their rev limit to 7500 or more?
Given, stock valve train will only handle up to a certain rpm* BMW engineers must have factored in some "room for error" has anyone actually tried raising their rev limiter, if so, to what RPM? *any after-market valve springs for e90s? *no doomsday theory lectures pls.

Didn't Craven experiment with this? I believe there is still power to be had around 7200 but i'm not certain.
I want this. http://www.noellemotors.de/3_2l_engi...7f2dc4c.0.html

I don't see the point, max power is at 6700, since I'm a poor driver sometimes I hit the limiter before shifting so I'm glad it is set. I'm sure the engine doesn't like it but that's my opinion, it's not an a M-car after all

Now i know why I'm going to get Craven's Supercharger instead. Hopefully i can get close to the same HP for half the price.

From following the thread, yea, the supercharger will get you there, for alot less money.
Hopefully his prediction of 330hp at the crank for the 330i's is true.

Racing Dynamics also offers a package to raise the rev limiter on the N52

I think RD has Cams, but to my knowledge they have never tested them and no one is running them..
I did raise the limit electronically with the OE tuning software, 7500 max but have since dropped to 7200 because there is no real power up there with just software. There are a couple guys on here running the stroker kit IIRC, but wow that's pricey! |

Sweet! how long were your running 7500 for? I'm assuming you had no issues daily driving it @7500 (otherwise you wouldn't be here, lol).

lol no issues with it at all, the car never complained. But it did seem like a long time to wind up that far, for little to no power reward.
We would have to swap cams I would think to get any usable power past 7K and raise the limit to 8k, whihc might stress the motor at that point, its unknown |

Do you recall how you raise the limiter? What do you mean by OE tuning software? Cheers |

if you have a 3 stage anything above 6900 (stock, basically) is pointless, and even more so if you have an AT (the transmission will shift anyway). the 3 stage is specifically designed with a ~7000rpm redline, it's impossible to make power beyond that.
With a different intake manifold, it could be done though. The engine will easily rev to 7500 with stock parts. You raise the limiter by modifying the calibration. I set mine at 7500 mostly so I don't bump into the limiter, it's not going to hurt anything but there's not a lot of benefit. In practice I rarely go beyond 7k. |

Thanks for the quick reply!
(I'm currently reading up on your Bimmerlabs tunes for a potential n52b30 swap into a euro e91 323i (n52b25) haha) Yeah it's a 130i, but rather than chasing power, I'm trying to get some extra headroom for a few corners at a tight local track. Coming into one 3rd gear corner, right before the braking zone I'm having to hold throttle for a second to avoid hitting the limiter. I've tried upshifting to 4th gear early but need to immediately downshift, and taking the corner in 4th is no fun - not enough control with the lack of engine braking & throttle response, and it doesn't pull out of the corner hard enough. Another corner I'm having to upshift on corner exit just as the car straightens... I'm bound to bash it... but also if the tail kicks out, I want to be able to power out of it. ...I'm starting to think the 3.91 ratio was an expensive mistake It seemed ideal with the mid corner speeds I previously had, but I've spent time fine tuning the balance and my mid corner speeds are quite a bit higher now. I'm hoping a few 100 extra rpm will be juuust enough! Last edited by tree233; 04-16-2021 at 12:14 PM.. |

Yes, I have my redline at 7500 with an n54 intake manifold. I have ran it this way for about 10k miles with frequent abuse and no issues. No point going past 7200 on a single or 3 stage intake manifold. If you are road racing the car, the N54 manifold is a much better choice due to linear powerband and more rev range IMO.

You could also just change your 3.91 to a 3.73 and that should give you the room to stay in 3rd gear during that corner, probably cheaper to do than switching to an n54 manifold and tuning for it
