Ride quality of non run flats vs. Safety

I'm debating whether to change the run flats on my 320d msport for non-rfts after reading that many have done this and found ride to be much more comfortable. My concern is having no spare, what if I get a puncture or worse still a blow out? Also is the improvement in ride worth it to sacrifice having the assurance of rfts keeping you on the road should a tyre blow out? Would like to hear some opinions.

How many blow outs have you had in your entire life, come to that how many blow outs have you heard that other people have ever had.

Personally I know of none, not one.

Ok fair point- so what do those of you on non run flats do if you have a puncture? I have certainly wrecked an alloy in the past after having a fast puncture.

18+ years of driving... ) blow-outs and 2 flats !!! Plus, talking of safety, the RFTs have no grip, bounce about and slide like you're on ice in all but dry conditions, so RFTs don't provide any real safety IMO.

Keep in the boot -

- Tyreweld
- Compressor
- Jack
- Porn mags
- Gloves

That will sort out most punctures and keep you amused if you can't fix the puncture and have to wait for BMW Assist.

They don't fit RFTs to the M range, so can't be a safety issue... the 130 is getting normal tyres next time round, will just arm Mrs B with Tyreweld cans

Yep... going to fit the BMW Performance suspension & exhaust when funds permit. Will be good to get the sensor sorted...

When the time comes, either get the items through Ant @ SpeedReligion, or let me order them for you

Forget BMW, even Honda & Toyota don't give you a spare anymore and don't use RFTs either - so if the sensible japs do it then is must be OK.

Don't forget that ESP keeps you going straight if you have a blowout (I've never had one and only 1 puncture in 20 years driving, probably 1/2 a million miles)

Touch wood ;-)

I only know of one blow-out in my 32 years (not that I can recall most of those years) but it was a pretty big one; all survived though!!! I hardly ever do motorway driving so a blow-out would be very low on the probability scale.

My old 335i, with 19s, chewed up my RFT's within a couple of miles anyway so I was stranded even with RFT's.

I'm pretty comfortable about changing given you've prepared the boot with the necessary.

How does the BMW warranty work and roadside work if you go to non RFT's? I understand that tyres could not cause a part to fail but playing devils advocate what would happen if say there was an issue with something on the suspension could BMW legally say it was the non-rf fault? Past experience with dealers (admittedly not BMW) have been to try and worm their way out of warranty work at the easiest opportunity!

I honestly cannot believe how much runflats cost and considering the only punctures I have ever had have been nails which lead to slow punctures rather than rapidly deflating tyres really think that when my tyres are due (at least 7mm of tread on all still!) that I will seriously consider non-RFTs and a couple of cans of Goo or similar!

For me blow outs, warranty, BMW etc etc all fall in 2nd place and below.... 1st priorty is grip and going in the right direction.

If I ever had an issue and (when fitted) the non-RFTs were considered to be part of the issue I'd simply walk away from that dealer and seek out another. Having spoken to BMW UK HQ I was reasured that non-RFTs do not affect warranty and they were unable to provide any examples or insight into situations (brakes, suspension, etc) where an problem could be attributed to a non-RFT tyre over that over an RFT (ie, problem wouldn't have occured if a non-RFT was fitted), so BMW UK seem to side with the user on this.

I know reality (dealers) is another story.

Remember you only have approx 4-6" sq of rubber at each corner of the car keeping you on the road...... you have to make sure that its the best money can buy at each corner and offers the best performance.
