Getting used 2010 335d..any suggestions?
First of all, I bought BMW 335i 1 month ago and gave me all kind of troubles from fuel injectors to white smoke from exhaust so I returned it to dealer and gave me my money back.
I thought of going back to 328i xdrive because it is much less troublesome, but I didn't enjoy the test drive at all so I considered getting 335d since apparently from my search it has less trouble compared to the 335i. I found a used 2010 BMW 335d sedan premium package, non-sport non-navi. Mileage is 36k. Priced at 27k (after negotiation). Is that a good price for the D? Any issues that I should be concern with before buying the car? What should I check for to avoid troubles later? The car still have 1 year left on Basic warranty. I am not sure if this warranty will cover all issues that I might see later. |

Sounds like a great price for the miles. I would INSIST on it being CPO. I love my 335d but would definitely not want this car without a long term warranty. CPO will give you 6 years / 100k miles. Given the frustration the dealer put you through with the 335i you likely have good bargaining power to insist on CPO.
The 335d is an amazing machine, but there are some owners which seem to be plagued with mysterious DDE and/or injector failures, temperamental SCR systems, and the ever concerning soot buidup in the intake tract. That said, don't let those things scare ya, just cover your tail and insure you have CPO coverage. It is a whole new feeling of fun. Quiet power! Not the barn blasting 7000rpm screaming power of a gasser. Instead the mammoth diesel just hunkers down and launches you without so much as a whimper or complaint as it hurdles you quietly over 120mph+ effortlessly. |

Yikes 3rd party dealer, be carefull what your getting into amigo?
There was a software update for certain years and I beleive you would fall under it best way is to go the dealer and have them run your key thru and see if any updates were installed or not.

Do you know what is the sticker price on this car? I heard they become cheaper than 335i after the discounts that they get. It may seem good price for 10' BMW 335d with 37k but negotiated price on these cars are 40k. Am I right?

There have been no transmission changes other than programming. Puerto-rico is likely referring to the SCR/EGR recall that included a new DDE (ECU) program from 2 years ago; likely it's been done but you need to check. |

I think the stealership just tried getting rid of a problematic 335i and pass it on to you, which is pretty common. Did you look at the service history before buying it? What year was the 335i as older ones are known to have lots of problems. Don't overlook the 335i as it is a beast and considered one of the greatest bimmers in the current BMW lineup.
If you want a strong revving, music-to-your-ears exhaust and super tune friendly (especially the N54 engine) car, give the 335i another shot. If you're ready to handle some 500+ lbs. of low-end torque (with a JBD tune) and awesome fuel mileage, come join us at the 335d club. As for your current 335d pick, I'd keep searching and find one with an actual BMW CPO warranty. Third party warranties are a bit spotty and I heard of some good ones but I'd play it safe. I know your state isn't heavily populated with as much stealerships as California, but if you're willing to search your surrounding states for the perfect one that you want then I say do it. Oh, have you thought about looking for one with a sports package?

The BMW 335i is not bad car at all and never said that. I really loved it even with the problems it had. I just didn't want to pay for fixing problems and spend time in dealerships thats why I got rid of it. I know 2011 ones are pretty solid now but it is out of my budget range. I am considering the 335d because I drive city way more than highway. Work and shopping centers are just around the corner so I want the 335 to be more fuel economy. There is no sport package used ones I found on 335d so far. I know it makes a big difference in 335i but I heard for 335d it is not beneficial. |

Honestly...if you are doing majority city driving and short trips...I am not sure a diesel is the best choice. Others may say I'm wrong....but to me, a diesel needs to come up to temperature and loves to just run and run. They are long haul type engines. Short trips will not be optimum on a diesel. You'll cake up the intake faster with soot due to the heavy oil misting / condensation that occurs most when an engine is cold.
I've always been of the mindset that for efficiency - if city, get a hybrid, if highway get a diesel. Just my 2 cents. |

Ditto Mark, 335d is NOT ment for city but long hauls and driving hard, other than that i STRONGLY suggest either go with Jetta TDi or new version 2 liter DIESEL from BMW soon to come out.
