No battery replacement. New key for $200!
Hi guys.
BMW just said that cars with comfort access need new keys as batteries can't be replaced! They want £140! Is this right? This is bmw London uk. |

Dealers won't replace batteries for regular (Non - Comfort Access) keys.
You'll have to buy a new one. Only Comfort Access keys have a "user" replaceable battery. If you're good with a soldering iron, you can pry your key open starting at the little hole at the edge where the key insert is (remove key insert). There's a panasonic VL2020 battery in there that can be replaced. You'll need to glue it back when you're done. |

With comfort access you can do it yourself, costs like $1.50 for the battery. Without comfort access I suppose you could also do it yourself, but it probably involves a decent bit of work.

..which I'd be willing to do to forego paying $200 for a new key when BMW should have had the foresight to also allow the changing of a battery on non CA keys.

It is rechargeable but can become defective. When it goes bad, the buttons won't work. You should however be able to start the car even if battery in the Non-CA is defective.

There are members who have pried apart the key to replace the battery.

BMW owners seem to like to replace stuff (seem to not want to load test the main battery). With a new fob there should be a new 2032 inside. Why not replace the entire fob, it shows affluence. You think the Mitt Romney crowd goes to wal mart to buy batteries?
