Will it actually have much of an effect if done by hand? Looking to get out the swirl marks on my sapphire black.

no not really, how fast can you move your hand in a random orbiting motion?

In small spots, I would think it would work. For example, behind a door handle. Wouldn't application by hand work fine? It certainly does with Scratch-X, which is basically the same kind of fine polish, right?
But for a whole-car solution like the OP is asking, the answer is: get a RO buffer or pay someone to polish the car every six months.

love to see him try though, that could be funny to watch.
honestly, it could work to spot remove small/minor problems, but anything more than that get a proper RO.

ScratchX is a filler product and that is also what would happen with Menzerna used by hand. You may hide any swirls marks or scratches but they will come back.

^^ I'm pretty sure Scratch-X is abrasive. It probably has fillers too, though.

the two RO's I would recommend would be the porter cable or the flex.
