How far would you commute?
Recent changes with my current employer have made me decide to start looking for other oppotunities. There aren't a ton out there, but they definitely exist. Unfortunately, all of them will require a commute that exceeds my current luxury of 6 miles round trip. I could easily handle 30 minutes each way, but anything above that starts to test my patience.
So, this week I had my second interview for a position that would be awesome. The company, responsibilities, and salary are all what I'm looking for, and it would be a great career move. The downside? The commute is about 46 miles EACH WAY! It took me 1 hour 10 minutes to get to the interview. Some of my time would be traveling to other facilities, but my "basecamp" would be a haul from my house. Would you do it for the "perfect" job? I know which way I'm leaning. Discuss. |

I used to commute about an hour one way to work, and it drained me. I would never do it again.

I wouldn't do it if there are any other options. 46 miles each way is pretty hefty to do for the long term, especially if in an area with substantial traffic. It'll add another 3 hours or so to your work day.
For the real acid test, take the drive to and from the location during rush hour to see what it would be really be like. At the very least, make sure that the new salary, etc. will cover the extra gas & mileage (or optimally, let you buy a car specifically for commuting). |

Due to Los Angeles traffic, I end up having to experience a 2 hour commute each day, one-way. So 4 hours in traffic total, daily. Let me tell you in no kind words: It fucking sucks.
But tough times, and a job is a job. |

My mom has been commuting 1hr + each way for over 30 years because she loves her job. That's not to say there aren't "those kinda days" every now and then, but if the job is truly your dream job I'd say take it

Not really. My mortgage will be paid in full within the next 12 years, and I don't want to walk away from that since I am "young". Since home values are low, I wouldn't get out of my mortgage with a ton of equity.
Also, I wouldn't want to live in an area more urban than where I am. Quote:
The salary bump would cover it, plus about 10%. Unfortunately, finding a similar salary within a 20 mile radius of my home will be difficult. |

Since you're from Chicagoland, you can appreciate the commute. It takes me 30 minutes to get to I90. Then I'm on I90 from Rt. 47 all the way to Arlington Heights Rd. From that exit, I'm about 10 minutes from the potential job. I went through almost a 1/4 tank round trip...92 miles. |

the extra gas will run you about 500-700 bucks per month. don't forget to include that into your decision.
btw, you need to drive a car that you enjoy. if you commute that far and drive a civic, then forget it. you will fall as sleep very fast. Last edited by graider; 09-21-2010 at 02:37 PM.. |

I commute about 90 miles a day and its definitely been worth it. I get compensated more than I did and I actually enjoy the drive. Just make sure you have a car that you love to drive. I use my Evo X and I just put on BPM or Area on my radio and clear my head
BTW I use an Evo X because I have to have AWD. I thought it would be rough at first, but its been a great car and I love it. Definitely more comfortable than my IX MR is.

I was doing an hour and fifteen minutes each way without traffic, talk about draining. You really can't have a life with 3 hours of commuting and an 8 to 10 hour workday. If the money is there though I'd suck it up for a while. The beautiful part about having a job is that you can always quit. haha

Not sure about before you get to 90, but I drive 90/Arlington Heights road all the time - it's not so bad. 90 backs up a little from the construction traffic rerouting off other highways but it's typically clear through Arl Hts

That's a lot of driving. Personally I wouldn't do it. I can't stand driving due to all of the morons on the road which equals tons of traffic which equals me being stressed out because all of these fucktards are in my way.
Plus it would be more wear and tear on my car, more stops for gas, quicker tire changes, more likely I would get a ticket because I would speed, etc. |

gimme a fucking break... I been commuting 1 hour + since I was 16. As far as I am concerned commuting means having a decent job. If I wanted to work up the block I would be a waiter or sell shit in a store.
On a GOOD day it takes an hour. On a bad day it is easily 2. I moved to the city for this reason. My commute is still 25-30 minutes but it is a lot less stressful. Working in the city requires these commutes and I am somewhat jealous that you could sit there and say I wouldn't take a job that requires longer than a 30 minute commute. What's even worse is 90% of the people commuting with me HATE their job. But, hey, that's life and the bills need to get paid regardless of how far you want to drive. |

I can't believe you guys are complaining over 30 mins. There are people that live in new jersey that come to work in Connecticut.
Reminds me of dumb and dumber Harry-"I cant believe there aren't any jobs!" Loyd-"yeah! Unless you want to work 40 hrs a week!"

I do 110 r/t every day. Takes me about 50 minutes each way. Some days, when it's nice out and I have the roadster with the top down and Bob Marley cranking, I even enjoy the commute.

I don't ever have a standard commute because I travel to the client's location. I had one client that I was assigned to for 2 weeks last summer that was a 130 mile round trip drive. It wasn't fun, but the nice thing was racking up ridiculous mileage.
