So what is the consensus on modding E90 mufflers? I have catless DPs, secondary cats and stock resonator, looking for a good sound for a daily driver.

Remove all packing? Cover passenger side perforation? This thread is all over the place and I am no exhaust expert

Generally sounds like removing packing alone is enough.

I don't know if you guys with stock e92 335i exhausts have noticed but if you listen closely, when you decel you can actually hear a bit of burbling so I'm guessing maybe removing packing alone is enough.

Don't know if this helps you guys or if anyone has opened up IS mufflers. It looks like straight through piping not perforated to me.

So you are you guys JUST removing the packing or are you also removing the perforated pipe inside the muffler and replacing it with another one? And 50% packing from both, or all the packing from both?

I am very confused and want to get this in a few weeks, I am going to be ordering cyba tips very soon and my friend is giving me his mufflers from his 335 since he had the muffler delete done.

I don't want to cut mine so no idea but from what I could see it branched off and wasn't just straight through to the tips. Looks like a few pipes going on inside the muffler and from angels I looked at looked all straight to me. My guess is maybe the IS is normal E9x muffler but with straight pipes and all packing still left inside?

So I removed all the packing from both sides (my 335i e92 does have it on both sides) and it is a little bit louder. I couldn't really hear the exhaust from inside the car before but now I can. It isn't super loud but you can hear it. It sounds pretty nice from outside.

If I were to do it again, I probably would have also replaced the pipes with straight pipes to get it louder

and keep in mind, these exhausts are stainless steel, so you need to have someone with the experience and tools to weld stainless.

How much did it cost to do? Do you have downpipes if not that would make it louder. Thanks.

Wow $200 just to cut open the muffler and remove the packing? What do you mean shop needs to know stainless steel welding, shouldn't ALL exhaust shops know that?

There are different gas mixtures you can use for stainless steel welding... so pretty much any shop can do it, the quality of the work will depend on the gas mixture they use.

Because I have the PE and a probe plus it's easier to know when you soak the PE with water, then shake it !

This thread has lots of misinformed information !

If you really sit down and think about it how does oem exhaust work????

When the flap is closed the there is back pressure created through the mid pipe and allows more free flow through the passenger side muffler which is a opened perforated muffler with packing apposed to the drivers side with the perforated insulated small resonator. When the flap is open flow is allowed to go through the drivers side muffler with the small perforated resonator that's why it's much louder with the " exhaust mod/ golf tee"

My bet is the PE /is mufflers have two small resonator type on both sides with solid pipes. I would put money on it but what do I know I'm just an engineer . Cheers.

So I read a few threads for the last 2-3 hours lol, so here is what I have gathered.

Removing the packing 75-100% yields "slightly" louder than stock but nothing much more.

Removing the packing 75-100% and replacing all the perforated piping with stainless steel piping makes it sound much louder and somewhat similar to PE?

BMW 335is mufflers have less packing and stainless piping from what someone saw through a probe?

My question is what about removing the packing 75-100% and WRAPPING the perforated piping? Wouldn't this be cheaper and more cost effective, how do you wrap exhaust parts anyway?
