I just purchased a used 2008 E92 and the idrive was working fine until one day it started to restart over and over. It would crash while reading the DVD. If I remove the DVD it would be fine. Took it to the dealer and its not coverrd under the CPO. They tried to do a software update and said the unit needs to be replaced I tried the reset but it didn't work. Was about $1300 to replace.

Now I come home and noticed that the unit appears to be reading the disc even with the car off, is this normal?

So it runs fine without the DVD? Is the disk obviously damaged? Do you have the two disk set? Try the other disk. If not, try a new DVD. There's a thread in this section of the forums with torrents for the latest NAV DVDs.

I was talking about CCC. The later releases of the map DVDs have 2 disks. Here's the thread:

I think it can access the disk any time, or at least any time the car is not in seep sleep mode (after several minutes of inactivity, it goes into deep sleep mode). Is the noise disk access noise?

Where can I find out more regarding the sleep modes? It appears the disk is being accessed when the car is off. Just dont' know if that is "normal". Curious to how it effects battery drain?

I'm going try the 2012 disk and report back.

Thanks

Yes it's normal. Mine does it. You can hear it start to read when you open the door. It does shut down eventually, after 15 minutes or so. I think it starts reading the disc when you unlock the doors so it's spun up and ready to use as soon as you hit start.
