Well smart phones are great, but I doubt it has all the attributes of a real OBD II scan tool. Plus you'll usually be working in bright sun light which may be difficult to read the phone's screen.
So if you are looking for just a simple OBDII scan tool to read and clear codes I recommend the Actron Actron CP9125 PocketScan Code Reader. I bought one for the office because everyone was always asking me about their check engine lights, so a friend and I went halves on the Actron. Sears sells it for $45. It works great for reading codes and clearing the CEL. If you want more capibility there are a lot of tools to choose from. Google "Sears scan tools" and you'll get pages of OBDII scan tools they sell either on line or at the store. I also suggest going to OBDII.com and reading up on the OBDII code system. The site also has a section on what to look for in scan tools. |

I bought Torque for fun, but I think I read somewhere that you only see certain codes, not everything. |

The best scanner is also going to depend on what you want it to do. If you are looking for a basic scanner to scan generic OBDII codes, any of the cheap ones are fine.
If you want to be able to scan and pull manufacturer specific codes (like BMW's extended codes) from the car. You'll wind up spending a little more than $100. Launch makes a series of decent low cost scanners that can read manufacturer specific codes. |

I got a P0305 misfire SES code and tried to clear it using the torque tool. No luck. The app is able to read the code and it connects to the ECU fine, but for some reason It wont clear the damn code! Do you guys clear the code while the car is running or while the engine is off ? Maybe my cheap amazon adapter is just not cutting it or maybe its a BMW thing :/, I'm planning on trying it out with my buddies jetta to verify the OBD II connector and app are working properly. Any other advice on clearing this code is much welcomed.

INPA. Cables and software all over eBay for far less than $100, I have a couple as well that I'd be willing to part with. You need a laptop though, not quite a compact handheld solution

there's also **************.com. Need a cable and a PC. Reads and clears DME codes. Registers battery. Resets adaptations. base software is free, you gotta pay if you want data logging features. I've found it useful

I used TORQUE app with my tablet to succesfully clear SES light for a stucked open thermostat few months ago. It worked great. SES light has not come back either. Not sure if mine is stucked open but no issues either. I will wait for WP replacement to change both I guess.

Actron makes a $49 OBDII pocket code reader tool for $49 sold at Sears. I keep one at my office when people ask me about their SES lights and want them reset. I also have an Actron scan Tool that works very well and records live data. I recommend them, other than a BMW scan tool like the Bav Tech. |

if you have a windows laptop, the easiest software to use is bmw logger. Just seach for it on google. I used to use INPA, but find this a lot easier and simpler to use. Basic version is free, but you'll need a USB-OBD2 dongle that you can order from the site or get on eBay. I just used the one I got with my INPA kit.
