N55 JB3 Tune
Hi everyone I just got a 2011 335i M sport coupe and am thinking about tuning it. Ive heard lots of good and bad things about the jb3 tune but I dont know what to think of it. I am wondering if this is a good tune and if it is worth doing? Does anyone currently have one in play? What are your opinions on it? Also if I take it to a dealer for service will I need to take it out before and do I need to be worried about check engine lights or codes popping up if I decide to install it? Im new to this forum so sorry if all these questions are repetetive. Thanks!

For the N55 there are 2 popular tunes Vishnu PROcede and JB3 N55 Stage 1.
Both are great tunes and achieve similar power. No codes should be present but their is no 100% guarantee when taking it to a dealer so its best to take it out. Let me know if I can help you any further with either as we have person experience with both. |

Vishnu has more features and autotunes.. But both give out similar performance.

It's definitely worth it, I picked up a 2011 e92 n55 two weeks ago and installed the jb3 on Monday night. Definitely perks the car right up. My car is also a lease.

It was a quick install, probably took a half hour or so. I believe it comes set to +2.75psi over stock and you can definitely feel the extra torque. Sound, not sure, maybe a little more turbo spooling. The car puts a smile on my face every morning driving to work.

I did note some turbo spooling increase after the installation. Not a dramatic difference but defintiely noteable.

I myself had the same worries as you before I got it. I was really waiting for GIAC or Cobb to come out with something but they didn't. With that said, so far I am very satisfied with my JB3 Stage 1. I have it at +4.9 boost and the car behaves like stock just with more power and no error codes so far. The noticeable gains are more in the low to mid range. I don't know why anyone would say a tune isn't worth it for the N55. You're getting 50-60hp and 60-70tque for $400 lol. People pay that kinda money for 10hp increase on NA cars.
The only thing I didn't notice was the claimed reduced turbo lag. Something I was really looking forward to, but the JB4 that is coming out might do a better job at it. The install isn't "Easy" either if you're doing something like this for the first time. Be patient, work slow, and have an extra person with you to hold a flash as you're figuring out where the sensors are and how they pop out. But after the fist time, yes it will be a breeze. I used 2 different instructions...1 provided by Terry and the other provided by a forum member in n54tech.com. Using both will make your installation easier. Good Luck if you get it, it's def worth it |

I do agree with Showtime on the turbo lag as it doesn't feel any better after the JB3, fingers crossed stage 2 fixes it.

The install on the tune is super simple, and takes less then 10min once you have done it once, so there are no issues, installing and removing and once gone leaves no physical trace as all the sensor taps are plug and play. Mike |

There's no discernible mpg increase. In fact, if you're on the gas, mileage is likely going to be worse as boost is higher and it's using more fuel. However, in normal driving, the mpg isn't any worse. I still got 29 mpg on a round trip drive up to LA and back (45 min each way).
Best bang for the buck mod you can buy. Period. I thought the install was easy, personally. If you've ever installed any parts on a car, this one is about a 2-3/5 in terms of difficulty, imo. Just take your time when it comes to installing the plugs. Make sure each one of them is snug and snapped in (and apparently b/c it's been done before, NOT backwards). Gains are immediate as well. I'm looking forward to the decreased lag with the JB4, but even with the mild lag (after all, it is a turbo), the car just GOES. 2nd and 3rd gear pulls through 3-5k rpm are hard and fast. Higher gears don't require downshifting as much. The first couple times I drove it, I actually let off on the gas because I didn't expect the pull to be so hard. It WILL put a smile on your face. You will hear additional turbo spooling like someone said. Additionally, the blow off valve, which I only rarely heard before, is now louder and more pronounced. Exhaust noises seem no different under WOT. On a side note, my car is also leased. I'll remove it for services. Took me ~45 minutes to install and I've had it on my car for about a month now. |

Do a bit more research and you'll find that it doesn't add power with the newer software updates. When/if dinan comes out with one, that will be effective. Having said that, I'm extremely surprised why no dinan replicas have been made after all these years. Would be a killer business if you asked me
