So I'm backing out of the garage this morning when I notice the car shaking a bit. I put it in neutral to listen to the engine and its idling rough, shaking, and making a bit of a diesel sound. Its almost like a cylinder isn't firing.

I start to drive to see if it smooths out but it doesn't. It gets a little smoother but you can feel the engine is running rough. About a mile down the road I get the service engine soon light.

Anybody experienced this before? The car has 40.6k on the clock so it should still be under BMW warranty, correct?

Any suggestions or should I take it into BMW?

I called BMW, car is still under warranty, they even said bring it in for a scheduled oil change.

They couldn't look at it today so I have to bring it in first thing Monday. I went over to Autozone and had the code read out. As I suspected, it coded cylinder 6 misfire.

I'm guessing a coil pack went bad. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Once one coil goes bad, the rest are not far behind. Good thing you are still under warranty.

That's what I'm afraid of. Is this normal on a BMW? I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles in all of the Ford vehicles I've ever owned and never had a coil go bad, or anything go bad for that matter. This car just turned over 40k and this happens?

They replaced the coil pack and it purs like a kitten now. They also changed the oil, microfilter, and rear brake pads. I think they even washed the car?

Good service, but the warranty is up at the end of the year and I'm not looking forward to their labor costs. I asked them what they'd charge for my next oil change after warranty expires and they said $160.

There is only one dealership in the Memphis area, so no competetive pricing.

It is funny you say that about your Ford. A guy I work with just had his Ford escape in for warranty work because all 6 of his coil packs went at once. The escape has 45K on it.

Anyway, as for the oil change, just do it yourself. I believe there is a kit you can buy with BMW oil and everything.

Really? That sucks. I've been driving Fords pretty much exclusively since 94, never have had one in the shop for anything. (probably just lucky)

I currently have an '04 V8 AWD Eddie Baurer Explorer with 67k on it and haven't had a singly problem with it. Before that I had a 99 and 00 Mustang with zero problems as well.

Anyway, as for the oil change, just do it yourself. I believe there is a kit you can buy with BMW oil and everything.

Basically, what it comes down to is that you never know. I know people that have Hondas and have never had an issue with them and then there is a guy I work with that had an accord and the transmission failed at 90K miles. So you never know.

300? Meh. Not surprised anymore by what a bmw dealer will charge. Unfortunately this is normal for a 06 325. Mine has 50k and 2 have been replaced already. The car just went out of warranty so the next one is one me. Like supernova said, they're 50 bucks online and pretty easy to diy.

I had another coil pack go bad at around 60k miles. I replaced it and haven't had any more go bad. The car just turned over 100k miles so I'm going to replace the other four coil packs when I change the spark plugs.

Change them yourself. I picked up the part for $60 and it only takes about an hour once you know how to remove all the crap that blocks access to them. There's a good DIY on this forum.

I had one coil pack go. Ordered 2 coil packs, replaced the bad one and had the second new one waiting for the next time. @20k miles later (yesterday), I made use of the second new coil pack I ordered last time.

I have seen people have to replaced a newer coil pack before the older one goes out. They are wear parts yes, but they are also electrical. Sometimes an electrical part fails right off the bat or well before it should. I also have a friend with a 5 series that has 240k+ miles on the same coil packs since the car was new. I wouldn't put much stock in replacing all 6 at once (actually, I think he replaced one recently). It's a simple process to figure out which one is bad and to change it....carry a T-40 and an 8mm socket(?) in your trunk (I carry a small tool box with tools I picked out for roadside maintenance that I am sure I can do, fuck calling a tow truck) Took me less then 15 minutes to leisurely change this last one.
