That's what the shop foreman told me too. There is nothing I can do to avoid the problems. Bad design.

Maybe a different car.

for the sake of this thread, how are we defining "experienced the carbon buildup issue"? Throwing a CEL? Loss of MPGs? or just visible signs upon disassembly?

I assumed it was the latter, but I suppose the OP needs to define it.

My carbon build up was confirmed by the dealer while replacing my injectors.

I was told by the shop foreman that my car was all clogged up by soot deposits. I have no other way of knowing/confirming.

Mine has exceeded 2 months!!

Anyone know why they choose to replace the intake instead of cleaning? I know it is plastic but disposable?

My guess is that the dealer can make more money through the warranty pay if they replace the "faulty" part, than cleaning it.

Redesign of the CCV was what I was told...and it's cheaper for BMW to replace the parts...get the old ones, clean themselves and put back in rotation.

Again maybe lines I was fed.

Almost 50,000 Miles

27.3 mpg, 35 mph (both averages of my typical drive)

Normally fill up at Speedway, don't know cetane

On a scale of 1 to 5 how hard do you drive? 2 or 3 depending on traffic

Highway/City Mix: 50/50

Carbon build up issue yes or no? YES

Additional Info:
Started to get limp mode about 43000 miles. Repair history:
1) thermal sensor was replaced (fall, 2013).
2) Limp mode again Jan 27, got car back Feb 25--REmoved cylinder head and sent out to remove carbon buildup.
3) SES came on 15 miles later, we'll see what they say now...

I'll post the codes when I get the car back.

Look, Ma! No more carbon!

Hey everyone.

It's been just over a year since my last carbon-related SES. My 2009 335D is just about to hit 70k miles.

I truly believe my last trip to the dealer for carbon was due to extremely low fuel quality. After my first buildup post, I stopped using convenience store fuels (WaWa here in eastern PA, Cumberland Farms etc. up in New England) and stuck instead with Shell and Sunoco mostly.

Due to some particularly poor planning on my part, I found myself outside of my normal haunts and in need of fuel not once, but twice in a row! First time I grabbed a tank of WaWa diesel and when that ran out, I tried a Volero station. Not 200 miles after the Valero stop I got the SES. The corresponding trip to the Dealer resulted in a new manifold and several sensors. I posted the details of that trip last January (2013).

Since then, I have stuck to my Shell/Sunoco routine. I have also started adding Power Service 03080-60 Cetane Boost and Diesel Cleaner to the tank at fill-ups (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001JT1FJ6?tag=deadt-20). My Mileage has remained about the same, power feels better and no carbon buildup for a full year of heavy (30k miles) driving.

Hope that helps. Happy motoring.

No Carbon build up and no check engine lights! Mixture of Power Service Diesel Kleen Cetane Boost and LUCAS fuel injector cleaner at every fill up. May be switching to Opti-Lube. Co-worker with the same car just ordered it after reading good reviews and will be testing it out.

Just purchased, so I have no information on fuel and driving style.

Carbon build up issue yes or no? Yes.

Additional Info:
I just purchased the car and took it to the dealer with an SES light and the common "red hose" oil leak. They found carbon buildup and are replacing the intake manifold under warranty as we speak. I'll update this post with all the repairs done when I pick the car up.

2011, 81,000 miles. 75:25 highway to city ratio and I like to step on it when I can.

Usually fill up with Shell or BP diesel, especially after I had read the advice on the forums regarding high turnover stations with name brand fuel. Having said that, here in the Upper Midwest I think the diesel only comes from a couple of different refineries.

CBU cleaned out of intake per the pertinent SIB last week after SES light came on for MAF and NOx sensors. Got the car back yesterday and drove 65 highway miles home; no further codes for now and got 39 mpg on the trip.

Carbon build up issue YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Additional Info:
Fighting with BMW NA right now to fix problem. BMW NA claims its a maintenance issue but the car has been perfectly maintained through the dealership from day one (with service records to prove it). AUL warranty company will not cover the cost because they claim it is an emission problem. Cost to fix $4,800. BMW NA alongside dealership has only offered to pay a $1,250 towards repairs. This has been a bad deal all together and I have not had my car back for over 60 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once I get this resolved I am selling it and will never buy a BMW again in my life no matter what! Even if I somehow win one in a contest I sell it immediately.

Bottom line: Stay away from 335d. You should not have to drive your car hard to avoid this problem.
I feel your pain! In SF Bay Area carbon cleaning costs 3k for a the diesel carbon and $750 on a gas E90. I commute daily on the freeway ~60miles. I am considering selling it and buying used e90 M3. But I should get Honda on a lease.
