Sorry to hear about your experience. Thanks for sharing.
Poor service is the only reason that has ever prompted me to consider purchasing another brand of vehicle. BMW needs to crack down on their dealer network.

The only other scenario I can think of would be someone dropping a large rock off an overpass and nailing your moonroof dead center. In that case, sure, it's a direct hit, I could see it cracking or, if it's not safety glass, shattering/exploding. But what are the chances of that? -Dan

Another moonroof shattering
335i coupe
I was driving down the freeway this am with the windows up and the moonroof closed. I had the sunshade open, as I had recently closed the moonroof not 5 minutes earlier. I heard a loud pop and was pelted with some glass. I drove to the nearest dealer and talked to a service advisor. He told me it was probably a rock. I was not near an overpass and there were no vehicles near me so, this seams as an unlikely answer. I am waiting to hear from the service department. |

this is nuts!
Looks like a general failure of moonroofs? On this note I have noticed that when I am at ahem... high speeds like 120mph+ the windows feel like they are pulling slightly away from the gaskets... like letting air in , driver and passenger coupe 335i glass... ~Frost

I personally think its an air pressure issue.. I quite frequently notice when I open and close my roof that my ears will plug up or pop and some passengers have also shared similar complaints. (my ears never do this on other cars).
Now if you recall back to the first passenger jet the de havilland comet. its windows were square and after pressurization and de pressurization it caused the glass to fail and in tern the aircraft wold crash. Now airplane windows are round to take the pressure differences without stress.. Could it be our square window is taking a lot of pressure each time a door is closed or opened or even the roof is opened. http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/56...scription.html I found an article about pressure in cars... Apparently as the pressure outside changes the inside pressure matches almost instantly since the system is open rather than a plan that is closed and never changes inside. |

Ready for a twist gents...this just recently happened to my wife's 06 e53. I was driving and she was in the passenger seat. Fortunately, the shade was closed. I gotta admit, the first thing out of my mouth (after "oh sh!t" of course) was "you're lucky I was in the car babe cuz I would've never believed you". I mean come on, it just exploded? when you look at from the dealers prospective it sounds pretty bunk.
My dealer also covered it under "goodwill" like the OP but the rolling joke at the store is that I went to a Dodger game and somebody took a bat to my car cuz I was mouthing off |

I wonder if this might be something to do with the car flexing at some point causing pressure on the window? My 93 mustang developed huge dents on both doors from flexing due to aggresive turns and general driving before i installed strut braces and underbody supports.I know these cars are built much better than my old mustang but maybe something to it?

Watch. One day, this will happen when the sunroof is open and someone gets hurt. BMW will go through a million dollar law suit. "I can't drive a car with sunroof anymore! Im too scared! Give me millions!" (hopefully it won't happen to any e90post members nor cause any serious injury to the owner. *knock on wood*)

Trouble with the 5 series
Hi guys:
Just picked up my new 2008 535i yesterday. I wanted the M3, but decided the 5 would be a better FAMILY car. Three hours later going down the freewayabout 70, BOOM, exploded sunroof. Cars and motorcyles around me scattered. I drove straight back to the dealership. They acted surprised, like they had never heard of this before. They ARE going to fix it. They had better!! No sign of bullets or rocks. It sounded like a shotgun went off in my ear, and thank god I had the inside cover shut. Just wanted everyone to know, It's not just the 3 series having this problem. Thanks for all your comments, I thought I was CRAZY. |

I am not an e90 owner. I have a BMW 330i e46, but was browsing various bimmer boards and saw this. Read most of the thread but did not see the OP's final resolution. The sunroof on my e46 exploded on me very early in my car's life. I bought mine in June 2004. Moonroof failed in December of that year. Same story as everyone else: Driving to the Portland airport, was only doing about 45mph at the time heading to the parking garage, but it was a cold day, probably around freezing. Heard a big "whooomp" sound and it was the moonroof, blown outward like everyone else already noted. I took pictures with my camera phone. BMW covered it under warranty. Never did find out what caused it or if there was a broad defect in other e46es. Obviously not a problem that is only affecting e90 owners... |

My wife has a 2005 Volvo V70, and her moonroof "exploded" a couple of years ago. If you Google "exploding sunroof," you'll see that it's far from a BMW-specific problem.
