In iTunes enable the ipod to be used as a USB hard drive. Use Windows Explorer to set up artist and album directories on the iPod. That is use the iPod as portable hard drive device. Only certain files are recognized : MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC according to the 3 series manual. I have used itunes to reconfigure my music files to MP3 (try the highest quality possible) and save then to a directory which is then copied to my iPod hard drive.
THis way I have the iPOd as aportable music palyer for my headphones and an incar source via the USB conection.
Works well with my 2nd Gen 20 GB ipod; it plays the songs in digital , powers the iPod and turns it off when I shut the engine.
For those of us that might explore this option, could you give us a few more details on exactly how to use an ipod as a USB drive once you enable it in itunes?
It sounds like you're using only MP3 files and loading them onto your ipod via itunes as usual. The 3.5mm jack is unplugged since music is sent via USB, correct?

Itunes does not allow you to import WMA unless first converted to MP3 or AAC. My entire music library is WMA lossless and I'd like to avoid converting it to MP3. Based on this, are you loading WMA files via drag&drop in my computer to the ipod drive root directory?

I'm guessing I won't be able to use itunes to generate playlists of the WMA music, right?

How do you think the sound quality compares to using a flash drive, 3.5mm jack, or generic USB hard drive?

I've never tried this, but you should be able to check the "Enable disk use" box in iTunes and then drag and drop your music onto the iPod using Windows Explorer.

No, you would use Windows Explorer, not iTunes.

Yes, you would not use the analog audio out jack since the car stereo would read the files via the USB connection and do the D/A conversion itself.

Yes.

Correct. You would have to use some other software for that. But are you sure the car will even play WMA files? I didn't know that.

Sound quality should be the same as any other USB drive but a little better than the 3.5 mm jack since the D/A conversion happens in the car stereo. This is assuming the car's D/A converter is of comparable quality to the one in the iPod.

Well, it's not a hard drive but it works...Finally decided to go w/the Corsair Voyager 16gb flash drive. I figured it's going to take me awhile to fill it up since I currently have only 8 gb of music. Bought it at Fry's for same price after rebate ($45) as Newegg. I loaded 1.5 gb & no issues whatsoever. Keep in mind this is summertime...IN TEXAS HEAT & HUMIDITY!

Just picked up this 32gb flash drive for $52 shipped off ebay the other day. Works great, looks ugly as sin, but no one sees it anyways.

Can you confirm that you can actually write 32GB on that memory stick? It's one of those "too good to be true" situations.

Here's the ebay scam I'm talking about:

Just to follow up on the external hard drives, I was initially worried about having a constant power supply to the drive all the time even when the car is locked, cause it may cause some damage to the drive (it's not a server ya know) or may cause battery drain on the very long run. After an experiment, the car shuts off the power when you lock it, it takes a few minutes to happen. External drives FTW !!!

Performed the read and write tests according to that ebay page and everything worked fine. I didn't load up the full 32 gigs, but Ill at least load more than 16 gigs to confirm that it works past that point and will report back. But so far everything looks kosher.

---Update--
Tried to write 30 gigs of music to the drive, said it completed, looked at files and they were all gibberish like the ebay link says. Clearly a fake, filing a fraud claim right now. Thanks for the heads up Peter!

Add this one to the flash drive list.

I've got one huge directory with all single songs in it, so I can just leave it on random, and I'm now adding whole albums. I'm no where close to filling the thing yet either, which is AWESOME.

Indexing is immediate, and there are no load times - so while the $/G is lower for a flash drive, there are definitely other benefits.

Here's the stick on newegg. It's like $110 after MIR.

Haha me too. Now I just feel bad for all the poor saps who bought the drive and then left feedback saying it was legitimate. Also, this seller is claiming I need to reformat the drive for it to work up to 32 gigs haha. Lucky I paid through paypal with my credit card... Charge-back time!

My understanding is that pretty much any thumb drive will work. It would probably be easier to make a list of any that don't work.

Anyone have a better procedure for clearing the iPod's index cache? Changing the thumbdrive name does not work, and I can't get the BMW to stop listing "Various Artists" as the artist for several of my songs that I have fixed the tags on.

Going to try using an iPod to give the iDrive something else to cache.
