With the exhaust bypass open (vacuum hose pulled off the actuator on the driver's side exhaust tip), the car will be slightly louder at idle and cruise. It will sound the same under boost. Try it. It takes 10 seconds to do and easy to put back to stock if you don't like it.

So....this hose is right in the back of the car...by the muffler? Does it help performance at all? Will it make the exhaust dramatically louder? I guess I will just try for myself whenever the rain stops here and we have a relativly warm day. As long as it does not hurt performance./ |

it makes the car VERY slightly louder. There will be a deeper tone at low to medium low rpm. There should be NO performance gain. At higher RPMs, the flap is open ANYWAY. at LOWER RPM you may actually LOSE some torque. The flap is designed to decrease noise AND increase backpressure at low RPM. This backpressure increase is designed to help low end torque.
Also guys.... You should take a look at the flap with the car OFF and the hose unplugged. Some of BMW's cars are a little backwards. For instance, on the E65, early in production the valve was closed by vacuum, so if you unplugged it, it would be always open. But then they changed it so that it's OPENED by vacuum, so if you unplugged it, it'd never open! (I may be backwards, it MAY have gone from vacuum open to vacuum close. Doesn't change the statement!) I don't beleive the 328 HAS the exhaust flap. |

Did it this weekend...
Took around 10 seconds... Louder at idle and a little louder under throttle to around 3500 RPM.... Nothing drastic...

Did it on my 330i and my brother's E92 335i both sound a little louder at low RPM, at around 2000 is the most obvious.

it just sounds different (better in my opinion). It's easy to just try and put back if you don't like the change. All it takes is the tee (or a screw is what I used) and a ziptie.
