Wheel Squeak with slow acceleration from stop.

Step 1: Remove wheel.

Step 2: Bend dust plate away from rotor.

Step 3: Replace rim and drive car.

Step 4: Repeat if necessary.

Pictures?
I'm not sure what I'm bending.
I got mine to stop for a month by putting some grease on something back there that had 3 little spots that were touching it. Is that the dust plate?

I'm in the office now but I can try when I get home. The dust cover, to my knowledge is a flimsy, circular "shield" that is about the same size as the rotor and is directly behind it when looking at the rotor. It runs all the way around it and runs just about flush with the rotor, you cant miss it. I just used some force to bend it away from the rotor (use your own judgment).

What contact points are you talking about? I wonder if that is what is rubbing...... How were you able to see them?

Borrowed from another DIY, here's the dust shield behind the rotor:

And here's a pic of it with the rotor in place:

Notice you can still see the shield behind the rotor as it's slightly bigger than the rotor.

This is the DIY photo I used to get mine to stop, though the grease I used wasn't heavy-duty enough and it's coming back.
Those points are what was rubbing.

That one doesn't look like mine but using that picture I think the thing I posted is it.
Think so? Don't want to bend the wrong thing. It's only the E-Brake wheel so that's why I'm cautious. Don't know if it's a piece associated with the ebrake.

When I say bend, I don't mean severe bend...just enough force to separate the part that is rubbing and for the aluminum cover to stay far enough away from the rotor.

ALSO: The only wheel I took off was the passenger rear wheel.

To get to those rubbing points you have to remove the entire rotor??

Yep, that's the wheel the Ebrake is on. That's the only one that squeals. And, yeah, I had to take it and the ebrake shoes off. Your way sounds much easier, I'm going to push it back after work.

Also, check your caliper and pads. For the caliper, check, clean slide pins (add grease) Sometimes the caliper does not open or close fully and this can cause to not open enough away from rotor. For the pads, add some anti-squeal in the back.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, the big piece that's about the diameter of the rotor is the dust shield. The smaller wheel is (apparently) the ebrake wheel.

I've read so many possible causes of light squeals from the wheels it's insane. I know the brake wear sensors are in the driver's front and passenger rear wheels. I've seen the solution to grease the ebrake wheel, grind the small nub off the sensors, regrease the caliper mounting hardware, regrease the back of the pads... Greasing the front pads didn't get me anywhere to fixing mine. Going to replace the front pads/rotors in a few thousand miles, so I decided to live with it.

hahaha yeah well the brake squeal at low speed (like a very high pitch dog whistle) is completely different then what I am referring to. I think that squeal is just pads getting old/dirty/need replacing/sell left kidney....etc

Gotcha. Mine only happens after I've been driving for awhile. It's a slight rotational squeak that varies with speed. My STI with DTC-70s makes less noise on my commute than my E90 does.

Yeah same here...after the brakes warm up...That is what my original DIY is referring to.

Gotcha. Didn't the DIY that other pic is from have the idea of grinding/flattening the raised parts that could contact the back of the rotor...?

I do believe so, I think I remember reading that one but I cannot find it.

Update: Squeak is still there but it comes and goes and is quieter. Bending or grinding those contact points away from the rotor is what needs to be done. Back at it this evening.

To confirm, the only way to physically get to those contact points is by removing the rotor correct?

I'm 95% sure rotor removal is required. I've not taken my rear brakes apart, personally, but I highly doubt you could snake your hand in there, somehow.

I removed my rotors and the E-brake shoes and grinded down the dust cover, then applied grease. After a month the squeal is coming back, getting a little louder each day. What needs to be done is to make those points flattened to match up with the rest of the dust cover.

How would that need to be done? Blowtorch and hammer?

Can you isolate it to one wheel...? If so, I'd see if that's the wheel with a pad wear sensor and grind that down, too. Just not sure where the sensor needs to be ground down, unfortunately. I just know that's another source of noise.

Yep, it's the passenger rear only. That's the wheel with the ebrake on it.

Duh... Don't know why I asked that to begin with.

That corner also has the pad wear sensor on it. Could be that thing. I suspect that I need to grind mine, but I haven't done it, yet. I'm hoping I just need to grind the little nub that sticks off the sensor.

How would I go about grinding that down? I'm not very skilled when it comes to these things, the dust cover was just self explanatory.

Also, I'm wondering what effect grinding that down will have on the reading in the car? The one that says when to replace brake pads.

i had to service my front brakes for the squeak to go away. i took off the pads and cleaned up the dust from the caliper assembly with sand paper and re greased everything and reassembled. no squeaking now.
