almost killed a child with my cars smoke

UPDATE***** re-cap. car is blowing blue smoke, and a lot of it. go through oil at a quart a week. posted this question of what could be causing it and you see the replies below. the forum conclusion was 1.) PCV valve or 2.) blown turbos/turbo seal. car is in the shop for two days so far.

turbos replaced.
upon inspection there really wasnt much oil in them...not enough to blow smoke like that. cant be PCV because i had a new valve cover put on a month ago. mechanic doesnt feel like it was the turbos (i wanted new ones anyway).

will update again if a solution is found but it doesnt as of now seem to be the two things everyone thought it was.
im running a stock cobb map so if its just running rich idk how thats possible...mainly blows smoke when i come to a stop. none on start up.

Abnormal for sure. Blue = oil. I'm fully catless, no smoke, just exhaust smell (love it)

I used to have a turbo scion tc, blue smoke when stopping = blown turbo seals or something else leaking oil into your exhaust path.

I've mentioned in other threads about this it does not sound normal but appears to be quite popular on this platform, especially as the platform gets older.

I expect black smoke/soot under hard acceleration fully catless, but I dont any smoking slowing down. Blue is oil. black is usually unburnt fuel.

I get white smoke especially in the winter on cold start, but it subsides pretty quick. I would guess it's all the condensation sitting in my muffler.

I get a puff of blue/white smoke on hard acceleration but apparently it's normal for RB turbos.

I had none of these "issues" before I went fully catless.

try putting it in neutral when coming to a stop, then back in drive

it will avoid back pressure and almost no smoke

Your turbo seals are going bad. When I upgraded my turbos, The smoke went away. I run full catless, upgraded turbos and meth. No smoke at all!!

I have smoke on start/warmup on bank one, but drive it about a block smoke is gone. I'm running AR catless and straight pipes. Pretty sure it's a turbo seal.

Oh and you can try going to a thicker oil like 10W-40 but it's just a band aid.

Blue Smoke = Oil = At least 1 of the Turbos are Starting to Die

White Smoke = Water being heated up & evaporating in your exhaust

Turbo seal is a definite possibility. Put the car up and pull the charge pipe going into the intercooler and the midpipe off the downpipes. Check for excessive liquid oil in the intake side or oil/lots of white burned powder in the exhaust side.

It could also be excessive oil pulling from the PCV. The valve cover houses most of the PCV system, and if it fails, it can suck excessive crankcase vapor and even liquid oil into the intake ports on decel (lots of manifold vacuum). The valve cover and labor is cheaper than a turbo, but have a shop check it out to determine what is bad.

Two scenarios. Both costly, but you could DIY.

1) Valve Cover Gasket (VCG) leak.

Check your PCV valve and the pipe leading to it. Oily? Valve Cover Gasket leak.
Troubleshoot: Get the RB PCV valve and new pipe from the dealer.
Check your oil cap, oily/gunky? VCG leak.
Check for oil droplets around the block. Yes? VCG leak.

Solution: Replace the gasket. If DIY, follow the Bentley book for recommended sealer, torque specs, how to, etc.

2) Turbo Seals
Check your tailpipe, LOT of oil buildup? Like you can see oil on your exhaust tips? Seals are bad.

Solution: Throw on cats (temp solution), smoke goes away...but you know your turbos are on their way out...albeit slowly. Get replacements (OEM) or upgrade to RB turbos (might as well...)

How I know? My car used to SMOKE like CRAZY. I welded in cats in the midpipe, wha-la no smoke. I have c**less downpipes, and I didn't want to go back (that's where the most gains are). My smoke wasn't even on one side, it was on both. The cats just catch the oil and burn it through before the exhaust hence you didn't see it when catted.

My 2 cents.

As other's have stated it's not normal.
Also, as other's have stated, sounds like it's time to look into new turbos.
I am fully catless with divorced piping all the way back and have almost nothing out of the exhaust.

I have alot of soot built up on my exhaust tips... it's all dry (don't see any liquidy looking oil) but are you saying the build up is from blown turbo seals?

i have catless DP's as well but still have my secondary cats

The soot is ok (just means you're running a bit rich...MUCH better than running lean, plus the gas smell is nice :]). What I was referring to was an oily residue or basically oil dripping from the tailpipes.

It got to the point my car would still continue to smoke a bit even AFTER I turned off the car. When you go catless, it takes longer for the pipes to heat up to burn off the excess oil.

I'm getting lots of white smoke from exhaust as well and only on start up from hot engine; goes away when cruising. Where is the water located and is there a fix to this?

I been noticing a lot that I occasionally will get quite a bit of white smoke coming out both my exhaust after strong pulls and then coming to a full stop a street lights or even under normal driving conditions. From little research I did, most people say its due to carbon build up and the white smoke is from it burning off.. so I migh clean it and get it done.

Any other members experience this, and would you say its caused from carbon build up?

Smoking is fun... every oil change / seafoam day I get excited. Last one was awesome with a smoke screen that made cars pull over and slow down. I need to video next time.

I had smoke when I went to a less restrictive exhaust and no cats... then I replaced the factory exhaust, but with gutted cats and the smoke disappeared. Backpressure plays a part.
