insurance deductibles on deer accidents?

Sup guys. I hit a deer on my e90 causing a huge dent in the hood and left kidney grill. My friend told me that unlike a regular 1000 dollar deductible for regular accidents, deer related accidents are considered an "act of god" and therefore have only a 500 dollar deductible.

Anyone know anything about this? I have statefarm insurance btw.

Also, i have no police report since right after hitting the deer i left the scene immediately since i was soo pissed and it was very late into the night. Will this be a problem?

Hitting animals are considered a comprehensive claim as they are kinda treated like rocks hitting the windshield as they are hard to prevent...so whatever your comprehensive deductible is that what it will be.........

at least this is how we treat them up here in Canada ....I work for Allstate Ins.........

Read the declarations page of your policy. There are two deductibles on auto policies. One for collisions and one for comprehensive. Collisions are just that. Comprehensive is anything else like theft, hail damage, etc. Not sure which it would fall under since it's a deer, not another car or fixed structure you hit, but probably collision.

Most people have similar deductibles for both, but it might differ. But there's no set number or special amount for "acts of god" unless it's some strange state rule there. It's what you chose when you signed up for your policy.

Insurance is a very important thing. Lots of people who are bankrupt out there got in that position because they didn't pay attention to their health, auto, or homeowners insurance when buying it. There are gaps in coverage and loopholes that can burn you. There are plenty of quick primers on insurance on the web you can read in a few minutes.

Just for fun, tell your agent you want to file an "uninsured motorist" claim, since the deer was on the road and didn't have insurance.

That is my understanding as well - whatever you deductible for no colision damage is.

Longtran, There are a pile of deer up in the canyons. Before I moved back east, I see one everytime I came around a hard bend.

Bummer. You're lucky it wasn't worse though... that can be very dangerous and people can be killed. It's probably a comprehensive claim... but just a guess. If so, no police report should be required.

I once got into an accident and blamed it on a deer. I wrecked my car and said that it was because I swerved to miss a deer. My insurance agent (Allstate) told me that if I ever see a deer, do not swerve. He said that I wouldn't be at fault if I could prove I hit a deer (dead carcass or deer hair/blood on car).
