My review of the e9x m3 oem exhaust mod VIDEO ADDED

Hey guys,

Right so I pottered down to my local garage this morning to cut up my oem exhaust and make it sound in my opinion, how it should sound when leaving the factory. I havnt really got any good pictures as I forgot to take some more after taking one with the back box on the floor.

Firstly for anyone considering doing this its is the most cost effective sound mod you can do. For 80 quid the exhaust sounds on par with my friends eisenmann race and unleashed the full v8 sound. It is something you need to hear in person as youtube videos rarely do any exhausts justice.

To start with you drop the back box to the floor and grind out the centre two sections using an angle grinder. Once the top plates have been removed you have to pull out all of the insulation which looks like a wild dog. Inside the exhaust you will see two pipes on either side one solid with some wire wool around and one perforated. The perforated one on each side needs cutting out and replacing with straight pipe. The diameter of the pipe you need is 2.5 inch or 63.5mm. Now the one mistake I have made doing this was removing the insulation off the solid pipes which is covering a small perforated section, I have wrapped this one to seal it off completely and the sound from the exhaust is of high quality but very loud. If I was to do it again I would have removed the insulation and not taped it up just to turn down the noise a touch. Once the new sections are in and welded up replace all the dog hair around the pipes just to stop the exhaust from sounding too tinny. Refit both top panels and weld up. Once welded it is best to wire brush everything and spray with a silver zinc spray to protect the welds from any potential rust.

Now onto driving the car. When starting the engine from cold its is slightly louder during the cold start phase but once this has completed it settles down to almost oem levels with a slight burble. When driving off it sounds how a sports exhaust should be. Again if I was doing it again I would only do the two perforated sections and just remove the insulation from the other two pipes. I cannot compare the driving experience to another sports exhaust as I have only heard the eisenmann stationary. After doing this I could not imagine spending circa 1500 pound on a back box to achieve a similar effect. I do plan to change the tips in future though. It may be in my head but it does seem to make the car feel slightly more responsive, I suppose because it is reducing the back pressure slightly by making the exhaust more free flowing.

Again I must reiterate how much this transforms the car. In a sense it makes the car feel complete and lime every area of it is how it should be. I will try and get a sound clip of it tomorrow so you can see the difference.

Right I've waffled on enough now I hope this helps anyone if the are considering doing it. If you had the tools it would actually be rather straight forward to do yourself if you are fairly practical.

Very nice.... somehow sounds louder than a eisenmann race (judging by youtube videos, not that it means much). :P

That was everything all done. There isn't many materials really just the offcuts of stainless really. You could use normal exhaust as it won't make much difference as its not exposed to the elements. I'm getting it adjusted on saturday. The two pipes in the link that are wrapped in wire wool, mine are wrapped in exhaust tape. I am removing this off both pipes to turn down the volume a bit. Don't get me wrong it sounds lovely outside the car, but inside is rather boomy. Costs 30 quid to adjust so I can't go wrong really.

Interesting.

I'm very interested in doing this to mine.

Will you make another video once it's done? So it's droning at the moment with the pipe being wrapped?

Isn't it welded back together already so you're cutting it up again to do the links?

Hi bobby if you are slightly technical and have all the tools you could do this quite easily. As pointed out by Phil200tdi who has a 335i I believe there are videos on YouTube regarding this. I think there will be a similar set up in the 335i boxes though. You just need to cut out the perforated sections or 3/4 of it to get the soundevel right
