First time I removed the door cards it took me a good 20 minutes per side. Second time went much quicker, third was no sweat at all, and now (lost count) I get them off in just a couple of minutes. Practice makes perfect!

First off just wanted to say thanks for the great post, nicely done! I'm a bit new to the scene and ventured on here because I was so saddened with the quality of the 2010 base system so I'm trying upgrade. I was wondering would a JL cleansweep work in place of the MS8? the MS8 is out of my budget. Also can point me to the post that has the speaker depths for the E92's?

Hi, thanks for that!

A good thread on speakers sizes is

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673

Also here's some links for info on the JL CLeensweep and how you set it up

As far as I've read they will work and alot of people use them, you just need to research which set up you need. For example some of the higher end OE systems need a signal summing device as well (CL-SSI). It doesn't sound like you will need that with the 'Base' spec but I'd hang on for someone else to comment before you comit to buying anything! Good luck

Thanks! I haven't actually totalled it all up but I'd say alot more than it would it I lived in the US! We get a bit ripped off over here! I'll see if I can pull all the receipts together and put up a rough price list.

I have thought about adding a trunk sub, VP Electricity makes a great enclosure but I dread to think what shipping would be! Maybe I'll have a look at it in a few months. I think the boss will kill me if I spend anymore money at the moment! It's quite addictive all this!

You will need an external amp together with the cleansweep so you would spend nearly as much as an MS-8 anyway, and you would still only have a very basic sounding system with zero adjustability.

Also, if you have the base system, you will need to change the front speakers as they are horrible and no DSP in the world will be able to make those sound good.

Its interesting that you ran the center speaker and rear decks off of your MS8. Never thought of doing that. I do not think you could do that with the CleanSweep since it only has 4 channels.

I don't think the CleanSweep has any built in amps so you couldn't run anything with just the CleanSweep. You would still be using the output of your headunit.

The MS8's a good bit of kit and I can recommend it for ease of install and setup. After you've got the hang of the initial setup you can tweak it all day long. The idea of running the centre and rears off of that was one picked up from the forum. At the minute I've still got a free channel so it would be almost rude not to add a sub at some point in the future!

Actually, the best way to do it is to decide what your budget is, and then see what fits. As I posted just now in another thread, the MS-8 does fill a few blocks on the diagram.

However, there are two things the MS-8 does where the CleanSweep only does one.

The factory signal in a base Stereo car or a Logic 7 car is processed - equalized, crossover filtered at times, etc.

The MS-8 and the CleanSweep both will "normalize" that signal back to flat. In a base Stereo car, we use it on the full-range front outputs of the head unit.

The CleanSweep has no adjustments, though - it gets you to flat - to a HiFi signal - and no farther. The MS-8 has some auto-tuning and some manual tuning (not a lot of manual) to let you get farther.

So the CleanSweep is a legit approach for a base Stereo car. With a Logic 7 car, there are other ways to get it to work hitting the market very soon if you don't want to get the MS-8. The big question is do you want old-school two-channel or multichannel?

Ok so after reading your advise looks like I'm still gonna have to go with the clean sweep do to budget restrictions I've about $1400 to play with so not much I can do. I'm planning on two amps, one for the interior speakers (which will be changed out) and one for the 12" for the trunk. I have most of the stuff at home just waiting on a few more to arrive.

I found a steal on amazon so got the clean sweep an amp for under $350. Way less the MS8 and leaves me with some extra cash for the speakers. Yeah totally agree on the speakers with you. I plan to use them as coasters afterwards. Prob all there good for.

Bargain! I recommend considering Techincs harness if you haven't already.

Hi, personally I'd recommend the sails to keep it looking stock. I'd definitely use Technics harness to avoid cutting anything. Why don't you have a go at installing it all yourself? It's half the fun!!

ok ill call the parts department and see how that goes tomorrow for the sails. Part of me wants to but dont have the time and really nervous about messing something up. When its your only car to get around for work and all its hard to have it in pieces. Im getting some high price quotes though. What would you estimate a job like this should cost. Im just missing the wiring?

In NY, I was being quoted 1200 to 2500 for Installation. That's why I did it myself.

. Are you in the city or elsewhere?

I did mine myself for the same reason but more out of fear od someone screwing something up. I ended up spending 3 weekends with the help of my brother doing the install. It wasnt quick!

At the end of the day you've got to do what you're comfortable with. If I wasn't confident in my own abilities I wouldn't have done it. It is after all a less than six month old car that wasn't cheap either! Fitting will no doubt cost a fair chunk of money which could be used towards the cost of equipment instead. If I were to be paying someone to install it I would want to know they were completely competent and knew the car inside out rather than just having a go. Some people are worth paying for, others aren't!

I would say that if you've got fair DIY skills, patience and the right tools it's perfectly manageable. The main thing is to research every area before hand and learn as much as you can before you touch it yourself. That's what I did and that's why I posted up my car, because I hadn't managed to find a guide to the newer iDrive dash removal.

The BMW is very well put together and not some fragile cheap hatch that snaps every clip when you try and remove something.

I didn't realise but Photobucket (where I've hosted the pictures) has a 10gb monthly bandwidth. I've just had an email saying it's almost reached it's quota! Can anyone recommend an alternative host before I start searching myself?
