Do you warm up your engine in the winter mornings?

I like to at least run it for about 30 seconds or so before I take off, not sure if this does anything really. This is also the first car I own that does not allow me to see the oil temp. (at least I think I can't). Any input?

Yea same with me! Just a habit for me, i leave it running in the garage a few minutes before I head out!

by the time I set the climate control, heated seats, radio, mirrors etc. The engine rpms normally have already leveled out.

I remember reading somewhere on the BMW site that these new engines don't need to be 'pre-heated' and that we should start up and go..........helps with fuel efficiency too. Now that the temperature is dropping as well, i notice in the mornings that the engine heats up alot quicker if i start driving rite away, compared to leaving it started for a 5-10 mins

Do you have an oil temp gauge in your car (is this part of idrive)? Or you just go by the rpm?

Just don't go all crazy on the gas when you start driving when the engine is cold... that's all.

The 335s had oil temp gauge ...

i park in a condo garage, so i just start and go. however if i'm parked outside and it's cold (like below -10) i'll wait for the idle revs to go down a bit.

Yeah, the manual says there's really no need to idle your engine on cold mornings. That being said, until the engine oil reaches optimal running temps, you shouldn't push the car hard (i.e. stay under 2500-3000rpms). I used to warm up my previous cars, but now I usually just take off after about 30 seconds and keep the rpms low

i park 2 floors down, so i start and go. takes about 30 secs to get outside so that should be sufficient to warm the engine. just no WOT's or nothing till i get to idle temp..only time ive ever had a rough start was in my e90 when it was about -35 including windchill. car shuddered a little bit, and the seats were hard as a rock. let it run for about 2 minutes before i left.

Same.

In addition to the heated seats and heated steering wheel, I think they should also offer a heated stick shift. It only makes sense.

My car is in a garage most of the time (at home and at work) so it's not usually much of an issue, but even when it's outside I usually just get in and go. Just take it easy on the car for the first few minutes of driving.

My thoughts as well. You only need about 1 minute max of idling the car. You can hear a difference in the sound of the engine when it has warmed up. Then you are good to go. More than that won't make a difference and you are just polluting the air and wasting gas.

yup i've got an oil temp guage......u can sit there with the car started all you want and it doesn't seem to go up much........until you start driving

Go by the manual! The best way to get the oil up to operating temperature and thus protect your engine is to get in the car and drive it (no high revs etc) This is what BMW reccommend.
Letting the engine idle will not get the oil to op temp for a long time and will be worse for your car in the long run.

BMW also recoommends that you change the oil every 10000kms or something stupid like that.....no thanks...lol..

I wait about 45-seconds to 1 minute. Mechanical parts wear out faster when the oil is cold.

Start and go also, well maybe like 10 seconds. But that's because I park 3 floors down at home. At work, it's outdoor, so in the dead of winter I'll probably wait 30 sec - minute or start it before I start cleaning the snow.
