Great guide. I'm looking at making my own tool, and using the BMW adapter (part no. 81292208037) which can be bought at ECS tuning; http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2165972/
Or does anyone know anywhere in Canada that I can buy this? I'm struggling to find a part number or place that sells the wand so I might have to custom make it. Last edited by ronokenneally; 10-09-2013 at 12:16 PM.. Reason: adding a part no. |

Has anyone had any luck with this on a 335d? My 62,000 mile car is currently sitting at Northwest BMW in Tacoma while they disassemble it to "officially diagnose". I have a call in to the BMW service hotline, but they told me it would be 3-5 days before they will call back to let me know if they can help or not. To me, this should all be covered under the California emissions warranty, but I'm sure they are going to fight it tooth and nail. Really disappointed in this considering I bought the car less than two months ago.

An OCC will certainly help you retain the oil vapors from the recirculation system. It will however not filter out all of them. Alpina_B3_Lux

I may win
I think I have the most build up ever seen on my valves.
I used the BMW walnut blasting tools and a Harbor Freight $54 open air blaster. I used coarse grit first then fine grit. It made no mess at all. If anyone lives near me I can loan out the tools I just did a full service valve cover gasket HPFP(because it failed) oil filter housing gasket Plugs two new vanos(just because) New charge pipe and BOV Burger oil catch can Thank you ECS Tuning Last edited by vr6extreme; 10-10-2013 at 09:27 PM.. |

Did mine, HF kit with the BMW adapters. Took me 5 hours start to finish, used (1 ) 25# box of shells. I think I could cut 1.5 hours off next time.
They were dirty, very, very, super, ugly, dirty. Had it at the dealers 4 times in the last 6 months for surging, bucking, hesitating, poor acceleration. Got the deer in the headlight look every time! Car is a 2009 335i with 50K on it. The black box was a bit hard to get off, just tapped in a small screw driver under the catch to open a small gap and it slid right off. I used 4 inch wide gorilla tape to cover the unused ports. I left the car in neutral with the handbrake on. I pulled the solinoid connector on the starter, and shorted it out to bump the motor to go to the next valve. I did install new intakes gaskets as I had them, no real need though as they still looked great and had decent spring to them. Results, OMG. Perfect, cold, hot, no matter, smooooooth acceleration! I am very happy! Last edited by markusvt; 10-21-2013 at 05:29 PM.. |

I was big time. Thought it was bad plugs but they looked fine.
BTW I was having issues after my home service only to find out my battery was failing as well. Made the car freak out big time |

Not really. The occasional one but nothing that concerned me. In fact had I never of read about carbon cleaning I wouldn't have booked it in to be done. There were no 'issues' so to speak that caused me to look for a fix.
After seeing all the carbon cleaning threads, and knowing mine had 85,000K's (not miles) and that the previous owner was a 75yo guy that upgraded to a new S Class because the 335i was too sporty, I can only imagine how it was driven and what fuel was used while he had it (first 50,000ks) Responsiveness was the most noticable gain with a little more HP. |

Excellent write up man, I'm thinking of doing this on my 335 with 40k miles and X5M with 60k miles

Although the guide in this thread is good i didn't use it since i didn't like the idea of turning the motor manually and wasting time doing that. Instead i used this pdf since it lists all part numbers, lots of pics and even has a section on how to temporally run the starter. Saved me a lot of time trying to remove the fan and do it by hand. I highly recommend anyone doing this jump the starter in small increments till the valves you want open and close. Since this is a good writeup thread this pdf will complement it for future DIY'ers.
