What do you think of this service schedule?

http://bavarianmachine.com/maintenance_post96.html

I am looking for a good indy shop, and this is apparently what they recommend.... a oil change every 5000 miles, and minor/major service every 10000 miles....

Seems excessive to me, its nowhere near the factory service schedule.

Do you think they are simply ripping me off with their schedule, or is it going to make a real difference if I follow their intervals?

seems excessive.

7.5k/6 mons for oil change (synthetic) dino (3 mos/5k)
30k for trans/diff/transfer case(xi) fluids, radiator(3yrs/30k)
2 yrs for brake fluid

did that for all my cars and never had a problem - cept for electrical issues which is unrelated

i'm probably missing some components, but you see the pattern

yeah thats what i thought too. Im going to do 7500mi oil changes and follow the factory schedule for rest of the fluids.

Cant believe people fall for these gimmicky schedules... and the shop would willingly screw its customers.

How long are you going to keep the car? Leasing it, then you don't need to follow this. Plan on keeping it for 100k+ then think about this schedule. It's toasty in TX and what they check and do will keep you on the road. Unless you are always checking the fluids, drips, suspension and driveline it may be worth it to you. If you are keeping the car long term.
If you did your research, BMWs are not a inexpensive car to own long term.

I will keep the car for around 5-6 years, or more if its reliable enough.

I dont mind spending money for maintenance, but I hate wasting money on maintenance that makes no difference.

If it really does need 5K oil changes to last 5 years, I will definitely do it. But if it works just fine doing the changes at 7.5K or 10K, then I will do it at those intervals.

Also, that schedule includes Inspection I & II which BMW has not used since 2005.

I'm not convinced of the need to change coolant more often than every 4 years nor transmission/diff fluid every 60k or so. And I agree with your idea of one "interim" oil change between each CBS madated change.

So I read the shop's oil service advice. I'm not sure how many times that picture of the gunked up engine can appear and make unnecessary oil changes gospel.

I changed my oil at 17,500 mile intervals and have taken pics of my valve train thru the oil filler oil and my car is as clean as that one.
