Make sure that after you attached it to the VM, you set it to COM1 inside the VM and set Latency to 1. If you've done all that, don't worry about the airbag test; some people always have problems with that. Just make sure you've got both black dots up top and if so proceed to NCS.

As for reverting to stock, there are conflicting reports about how best to do that (blank MAN file seems easiest but isn't always recommended, using Expertmode seems to be the right way), but honestly I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can't do serious damage with coding (unlike bad engine tunes), so if there's some behavior that's annoying you, see if it can be coded differently -- otherwise, just enjoy the car.

Before you make any coding changes, read the various modules (CAS, DWAI, DWAS, KOMBI, NFRM, etc.) and make a copy of the resulting FSW_PSW TRC files. That way, if you ever need to revert back to factory coding, you can just overwrite the files with your backups.

Hi guys

I've been reading these posts for hours now, trying to figure out where I went wrong with my install or cable purchase.

I'm running into trouble communicating with my mini r53 and these programs. I'm hoping someone can help me fix my issues. I'll edit my post later with my exact errors, but I've already tried the common fixes I keep reading about. I hope to download the programs from here and reinstall them.

You can do damage my friend... Although it's unlikely.

It depends on how far you take the 'coding'. If it's just enabling simple features, the risk of failure is very low. If it's editing nettodat, using tool32, or winkfp - there is a much higher risk involved. Keep in mind that wert values for different things often coorespond to different voltages, so you could infact run a higher voltage than desired.

Other than that, if you don't go out of scope, it's relatively safe. Of course it's important to maintain laptop and car battery voltage (meaning don't try on a weak car battery, or drained laptop battery), turn off accessories, don't use a cheap cable, process each module seperately, etc..

And as far as coding back to stock, I suggest using a blank MAN file while using expertmode.

PS: Hard to do damage with ECU tuning unless you actually intend to

I look at this thread once every blue moon, happy coding everyone.

i need some help guys..
i've made the backup FSW_PSW.TRC, then a new FSW_PSW.TRC through F4>CAS which to my understand i will use FSW_PSW.MAN to edit and load new codes on to the car. However, when i open up FSW_PSW.MAN to change the codes, I don't see BC_DIGITAL_V, in fact, the codes in it looks very much different than what the DIY FSW_PSW.MAN screenshot appears..any further assistance??

I tried loading my back up FSW_PSW.MAN to start over, it wouldn't work so i panicked and loaded a blank .MAN to try and revert back to stock codes and now i get this...

That does not look like a trace file from the KOMBI module.

Expertmode does not take in to account any man file. It is turned off in the profile settings. Maybe you meant to clear out the TRC file to be on the save side. The "code" job script in expert mode works off the program files tied to the VO, not the MAN.

Looks to be your CAS module. Looks like you followed the DIY posted on here
The DIY here is wrong when it lists the module for the digital speed-o. It's in the KOMBI. The rest of the DIY is good though. Mentioned that a few time a while back.

The DIY has a typo. BC_DIGITAL_V is in KOMBI, not CAS. Also, make sure that after reading a module and generating the TRC file you copy its contents to the MAN file for editing.

Thanks. Yes, I meant clear TRC file. And even though the MAN file is ignored in expertmodus, it's good measure to clear that, the trc file, and even the nettodat.trc.

Keep it clean.

Agreed. Also that's a good thing to re-cap everyone.
If you make a type-o or something and hit code and get an error, if the error continues when trying to reset it, clear your work files to empty.

If you make a type-o or something and hit code and get an error, if the error continues when trying to reset it, clear your work files to empty.
I think I'll make a little batch file later that clears everything and post it up here.

Run the batch file, then resume the coding.

I use a few different batch file tricks in my coding to simplify the process.

I don't recall any instructions dealing with KOMBI in the NCS_DIY.pdf.... what do i need to do to get the correct trace file?

also, per NCS_DIY, picture on step 22 shows an existing FSW PSW MAN profile. so after saving a back-up copy on step 49, do i save the expertmode profile as FSW PSW MAN profile thus having 2 FSW PSW MAN profile? or do i use the ORIGINAL FSW PSW MAN for step 52 and going forth?

Keep it clean.
+1 with that and what grant says.

I always clear these files when working on cars. Also required when working on different platform of cars (e90 to e60 etc).

Just a proper way to do things (eliminate any risk).

Expertmode is the best way to revert a module back to default

Please do man.

People need to search more rather than posting questions that have been answered million times. Reduces clutter and confusion if everything is in one spot.

You have pre-LCI so you actually need the old daten files to access your NFRM...
