TDI's picture before surgery. Do you recall how heavy it was? I'm thinking 40 lbs but this is a WAG.

Way to go Stan and TDI best of luck on getting the install done. Easter bunny might give TDI a sub 12 second 1/4 mile in the end after all of the work is done and he goes to the track. That might be a stretch but he ran 12.6ish before.

I'm hoping the 4 test fits go well so "the rest of us" can get the green light (pun intended).

Used my new "spare" SCR midpipe to check Stan's handiwork. Looks pretty good.

Good grief, I spelled "jaking" instead of "jacking"...

I'm very upset that I didn't record how heavy the DPF was. Can't find any data on that. Will be sure to measure it after removal and post results. But I recall it being much, much heavier than Stan's downpipe.

Whats the advantage of using this pipe instead of a normal dpf delete?

In theory I like the idea of a DPF delete, one less fragile emission component to go wrong on us over the life of the car.

However, I did about 30 minutes of google searching the other day and those in Euroland who have done DPF deletes all seem to acknowledge an increased amount of diesel smoke. TDI and others who are embarking on this, can you comment what level of smoke you are seeing?

To me, part of the allure of our 335d is the refinement, being able to have a remarkably clean diesel with mind blowing performance and economy to brag about.

You will definitely get more diesel smoke with a DPF delete, most noticeably upon WOT.

Correct me if Im wrong but I wont mind blowing black smoke, diesel TRUCKs do it!! Anyway, would it still be possible to use the urea(which BTW I have a Puma case) to omit the smoke otherwise id do the METH stuff to take its place like someone has done already

You will only get the black smoke from a rich air/fuel mixture..335d can make no smoke with a dpf delete, depending on the tuning (how quickly the fuel comes on in relation to boost, and how much fuel is being delivered in relation to how much air the turbo(s) are capable of producing) ... The urea injection is to reduce nox gases which are more plentiful with LESS particulates..

The euro guys have reported smoke, but only a little bit when cold and those guys were all pretty tuned. I believe tdi reported just a little bit of smoke barely noticeable. You aren't going to be making black clouds unless you have something wrong.

I can say on my 330dA with DPF delete, I have some smoke when I floor it.
At normal driving round the city theres no smoke at all. Only on hard accelleration where you just floor it.
If you accelerate hard without just flooring it, but gently squeeze the accellerator to the floor as the speed build up theres also no smoke.

I agree with what others have said. But I'll add a few other observations.

There's smoke on startup. When it's very cold, there's a significant plume of white smoke for the first couple seconds. On warm starts, there's a puff of dark smoke.

I still have the diesel oxidative catalyst (DOC) in the canister. Once it's warmed up it helps reduce particulates and other emissions significantly, as well the classic diesel exhaust smell. However, if it gets too hot (full fueling for example) its ability to reduce emissions diminishes significantly, and in some cases makes things worse.

On full fueling there's visible smoke. Especially at the higher rpm's where the EGT's start increasing. Normal driving, even mildly aggressive, I don't see any evidence of smoke.

The exhaust pipe tips get dirtier faster. Note that even with the DPF mine would build up carbon deposits...

With the downpipe the DOC will go away. Do not yet have any firsthand observations to make on the impact of what this will do relative to the setup being operated now. I expect more diesel smell for certain.

Hey Guys
I have my x20d (118d) engine tuned at ecotune with their excellent dpf delete pipe, Any smoke i get is negligibe, in the uk cars are tested annually for safety Diesels are given a smoke test. where the current limit is 1.5% my car achieved 0.04% smoke with the above mentioned pipe fitted with the ecotune map. I have had Many Diesels most VW before as they are common over here and my tuned BMW is less smokey than any previously owned Diesel.
I dont understand why there is so much negativity by some on this thread toward ecotune, As ecotune are held in high regard here and in europe for there bmw developments, esp on dieslels, I think some of you will be surprised by results form stans maps, the graphs he posted previously tell all. My car was stock 143hp now with delete pipe and software is producing 210bhp and 350 lb ft.

As I have no immediate plans to do any emissions-related mods, I have been just reading and pondering. But to keep my mind around these issues, let me ask a question that may have already been addressed in another thread or in this one.

DPF delete seems to do nothing about the carbon buildup, right? DPF delete seems to be strictly a performance mod or preventive maintenance strategy for the related equipment. Same thing re preventive tactics perhaps for SCR equipment, right? The EGR seems to be the only place to deal with CBU, right?

Performance yes also increased longevity of components such as turbo's and manifolds due the decrease in egt.
fuel saving due to removal of post injection. (Active regeneration)
In the uk its a cost saver as cars dont cover long distances so the dpf fills faster. Basically DPFs are consumables have a life and are very costly to replace.

From my data it appears the car starts to defuel if the EGT's get to ~1200F. Never seen that except at the 1/4 mile with the DPF in place.

The link posted earlier of my dyno with the Evolve and Evolve+Custom stuff showed EGT's (post turbo, pre DOC) for dyno pulls where the EGT's touched 1100 F with the Evolve and ~1150 F with Evolve+Custom.

With the Ecotune + Custom I haven't seen anything higher than 1050 F and that's at much higher hp levels than previously. Not sure what this will do with the downpipe, but I'd expect it to be a little lower.

Morry86's comment about longer component life is right on the money. If you ever looked at how hot the EGT's were post turbo when shutting down your vehicle ... well I never liked how hot things were. With the DPF delete the EGT's are much cooler in general and also at idle things cool down very fast. Shutting down at EGT's below 350F is now quick and easy to do.
