what a great resolution to this story, you are a good man OP.

And as for POLICE - if they had bothered they could have nailed the ass.oles who tried to steal it again later had they paid attention. And it's so luck car was not higher up the blocks as it would been vandalized big time I bet.

someone said here something about stealing entry codes.

I've heard abotu this here from a magazine as well that tests anti theft devices and the staff of the magazine invites a 'professional' (mostly a cop or someone like that who knows how this works) and they demonstrate how quickly they can steal the car. So there is probably some misinformation regarding the matter in the post here, which was investigated and proven that it's hard to start up the car.

The fact is that at least in europe some top notch car theives have already built equipment to start up E9x (in 2006) and it is an expensive piece of computer (20k usd i think) and is rare but it does exist and when our cars get jacked they use it to get into the car and than with its help do some things inside of the car (magazine hinted vaguely what but probably not good to say here) and they start it up without any issues, also takes like 30 seconds if car has no alarm and bit longer if it does.

so the moral is don't assume that our cars are hard to steal, invest into good alarm and immobilizer.Oh and seems like parking on an incline helps.

Awesome post! Congrats to the finder! Here in Austria, Vienna, they stole an x5 from the BMW dealership (one of their own).... Another colleague of mine got his 2 years old 330i cabrio stolen. He did get the money from his insurance, however, after his car got stolen in his garage that is inside the building he lives in, he is now worried that they will steal his new car again. As a result of all of this, BMW only now send out a letter that offers Navigation tracking system installed by themselves, for a fee, of course.

MY opinion was with the economy bein bad. Probably did an Insurance Job. thinkin it wouldnt be recovered so soon because its out of home state. Also Usually doesnt show in system of recovery if its found in another state, Unless its searched for. Just my Op plus BMW's not an easy badboy to grab unless you have the keys itself. But congrats to the owner for findin his ride,,great to see people helpin each other out here.

So i got a question about this one. It seems like the car has BMW assist because of the shark fin. So why wasnt the owner able to locate the car with BMW service especailly when it has Cali plate in NYC???

@nybsbl04 Awesome job...great to read stories like this where people go out of their way to help out a complete stranger. Not something that happens every day.

I would say they slimjimed the door, or even use screwdriver on the lock mechanism (known weakness), get into cabin, push trunk button, voila! into trunk they go. With a wrench, the terminal comes off in 30s flat. With pliers like the way you do it, probably 5 min.

This makes no sense. The owner would have reported it stolen, tickets were piling up on it. Yeah, like the meter maids in NY just put tickets on cars without running the plates and VIN?

Awesome resolution, but I agree with a few people here. It does seem fishy (not on your part, on the owner's part).
