mpg...again!!

Well just thought that it might be of interest to people.

I've done c.600 miles in the 330i now - lovely engine, lovely soundtrack, goes very well once above c4k revs...

And, average mpg is 28.5.....

The 320i, same usage, only returned 32 average.....

It got to be said that it makes a very poor case for the 320i...

Both cars are M spec and auto and driven by me over same roads.

By the way, have any 330i owners experienced the "shake" at tickover...????

28.5 is very good for a 330i, I get more like 24. Although mine is an '06 and not efficient dynamics.

Haven't experienced a shake at tickover.

Indeed it does if the only criteria for choosing between the two was fuel economy. Factor in the fact that the 330 is about £5k more (ish) then it's not the only criteria.

Sure, if the list price was the same no-one in their right mind would go for the four-pot to get 4mpg better mileage, but the list price is not the same, is it?

I don't have rough tickover on mine but its not ED - I think the ED cars run extra lean during idle which can make them feel a bit rough.

I get around 26 out of my non ED 330 auto over a mixed week of motorway, town and dual carriageway - the difference for ED doesn't seem as good as the claims.

Yeah...ok ok......I know....I was just making the point that one of the 320i's selling points is its supposedly good mpg.......which just doesnt happen in practice. On the contrary you wouldn't expect the 330i to be particularly economical, when its actually not so bad...

Often smaller engined cars especially when the car itself is very heavy don't return good MPG.

How does the 320i and the 330i compare? Are they worth the £5K difference in price?

That again depends if your car is your only car or just your daily driver I suppose!

I guess that's subjective. Having owned six-cylinder models before I thought long and hard about getting the four-pot. In reality, I miss the noise from the six-pot more than outright performance, which is difficult to use these days. Of course, the four-pot has suffered some horror stories on here and the owners are understandably jaded (and they have my sympathy) but when the four-pot is working properly (fortunately mine always has) then it's a very good engine and a good performer. The output is more or less identical to the 2.2 litre six in the e46 320i.

If buying second hand where the difference in value becomes less I think it would have to be a sixer. Likewise, if my four-pot had given the grief that it has to others my opinion would be different too.

My 330i went in for a the Steering Coloum problem a few weeks ago, and
I was loaned a 320 M Sport, I found that as it had less power than mine,
I had to push it a bit harder, and that made the MPG worse than the 330i.

I get about 450 miles to a tank (depending on the run), but when I do
motorway the computer says 510 miles to a tank. I'm quite impressed with
that.

My E93 325i (which we all know is a 3 litre) is still averaging over 31 after 4 months ownership.
