Faulty Steering Lock Code
Hi Guys,
Well I have had the honour of a RED Fault code apearing on my dash. The code says Faulty Steering Lock.. Took to the Bris Stealership and cost me $90 for them to tell me i need to fork out $1800 to replace a STEERING COLUMN!!!! WTF! does anyone know how to remove this fault code as i can drive my car fine and am not keen to part with the best bit of 2K! 2k is for tunes/wheels/suspension bits not for a $20 part that BMW dont stock so they make you buy the whole unit! ANy one had this problem with possible fixes I would much appreciate your feedback.. Thanks GUYS.. |

Mate if you have to buy the steering column dont buy it through bmw, you can get them used for about $500.
a few guys have also cleaned/lubed there steering column but it was a pretty damn in depth process for serious DIY er's which shall show up if you do a search. (by memory the cleaning lubricating was to do with the lock mechanism) |

The same thing happened to me 2 months ago, i went to a private mechanic and they plugged my car to their programming software and removed the code. As simple as that.

Can someone explain this... as I have read it in a couple of posts.
If the car reports "Faulty Steering Lock" and BMW say $2500 to fix it... what the hell is clearing the code going to do? Does the car have a 2.5k problem or not?? Surely by clearing the code you are simply buying a few extra days/weeks until it appears again?

Cheers guys,
Maybe a silly Q, but any potential issues to look out for when re-coding these E92s?? Or is it simply let the Scan tool do the work. Found a mob in Bris that says he can help - just want to make sure he is helping.. cheers |

Update guys - car is now LOCKED..
Will not start, turn on - nothing. Being towed.... What a great start to a Monday! Word of warning - if this code appears on your dash - get it removed or replace your column. It will eventualy cease your car.. 2k down the drain. |

What code exactly are you removing/doing and can I do it through a Dcan cable and laptop?

Clean and lubricate the lock mechanism first then clear the faulty code. It's a scam to shell out $ 2K because of a dirty lock and a faulty code which is not user friendly to clear at all, shame on BMW.
